TESTIMONIES OF OUR MEMBERS

Wow, thinking back into the past… Here I sit writing this at age 22, thinking of the day that I accepted Christ as my Savior. I was 5 years old. It was February 8th back in 1987. I remember Pastor Peter coming over to my house and praying with me and my family. My Grandma said that I was “practically born on the altar,” but I had to make my own choice. It is really nice to know that God chose me, just like He has chosen everyone, but each of us has to make a personal choice to accept Him.
Evan Kidd in Paris
Most people I have talked with accepted Jesus when they were in their 20s, 30s, even 40s, but not many have spoken about an early understanding. I was brought up in the church, Christian schools, Christian teachers, Christian friends, Christian karate classes. Everything was Christian. Mom, Dad, Grandma, Granddad and aunts were all Christians. I was involved in Awana, Vacation Bible School, church plays, just about everything I could possibly get into. I have been very, very blessed to have such a strong family abiding in the ways of Christ.

As a little kid, I was thirsty to learn all of the stories, but it wasn’t until age 13 that I really understood the intense side of being a Christian, what a personal relationship with Jesus really meant. A group of firefighters who were on fire for Christ came to our school and asked who was going to be a warrior. Most people were nervous to stand up, but the guys said, “Come up to the front.” The Holy Spirit picked me up, and I started to walk to the front. That is when I rededicated my life to Christ. I finally experienced “the change” that people in church talked about. It felt wonderful! It felt like no one could stop me--one of those “high off Christ” feelings. After that, I got involved with the youth group, went on retreats and trips with the youth and became an Awana leader.

After a few more years, I graduated from high school and started going to college. At age 19 my world changed very fast. I was suddenly on my own, living and learning my way around foreign countries, working as a fashion model. I have always been taught about the world and the temptations in it, but now I saw firsthand what kind of web Satan had woven--homosexuals, drugs, sexual immorality, you name it. People came to me offering all of these things, like Satan coming to Jesus in the desert. But before I left home, the people of the church had laid hands on me and prayed for me. Through those prayers and a strong foundation in Christ, I was able to stand strong against temptation.

Two years went by, and I turned 21. I was in Paris and fell sick with a parasite for 6 months, not knowing what was affecting my body. I came home for the holidays, sick and feeling terrible. January 2003 came and I had to go back overseas. I was in no condition to go. It wasn’t until I was sitting in the balcony of Brooklyn Tabernacle that I learned about the healing power of God. God healed me from the parasite! When that happened, I wanted to be baptized again as an adult. After that I was telling everyone about my experiences with Christ. People thought I was nuts, but you are not crazy if you love God.

Practically all my life I have been a Christian, but still, to this very day, God is always showing more of Himself to me. I have my questions about why things have to happen, but I understand and have full trust that God has plan for my life, just like He has a plan for yours.
