How the Uinversal Oil Filter works
How the UOFW works
Photo 1
The UOFW is comprised of two seperate sections, the hinge drive assembly and the band clamp assembly.

The hinge drive assembly consists of five segments connected by four hinges, with a torque drive application component constructed in the center segment.  The hinges of the drive assembly allow the UOFW the flexibility to adjust to an extremely broad range of oil filter sizes.  The hollow hex drive component in the center segment offers the user alternative methods to engage torque application.

The band clamp assembly consists of a standard band or hose clamp, but with a uniquely designed quick-release, thumbscrew adjustment.  The band clamp produces a significantly powerful, yet non-destructive grip to the oil filter canister.  Since the band clamp is capable of an extensive diameter adjustment, it performs with the hinge drive assembly to fit all oil filter sizes.

The band clamp assembly is slipped through the raised slots of the two end segments of the hinge drive assembly to complete the tool as Photo1 above illustrates.

The flexibility of the quick-release band clamp and hinge elements of the hinge drive assembly alows the UOFW to quickly adjust to any size commercially available automobile oil filter.  Photos 2 & 3 shows the UOFW fitting a 3" and a 3 1/2" diameter oil filter, respectively.
However, the oil filters above were ones I happened to have on hand at the moment.  Photos 4 & 5 illustrate the full range the UOFW is capable of...2 1/2" to 5" diameter!  The dimensions can be manipulated further by either lengthening or shortening the individual segments, and by the hinge design itself during fabrication.
