Points to Ponder : Star Trek
In this edition of Points to Ponder we bring you a look at the 2nd pilot for Star Trek, one that deals with a man achieving god-like powers and the danger that comes when wisdom is absent and frailties abound.

And now without further ado, some Points to Ponder about.....

Where No Man Has Gone Before
The Enterprise picks up a signal from a distress beacon that has call letters that are from the U.S.S. Valiant, which disapeared 200 years ago. Well actually, the ep says 2 different things. One time it says OVER two centuries, another time it says ALMOST two centuries. Listen here to the brief audio clips. OVER ALMOST

Only reason I pick this nit is because there is never given an exact date for when Star Trek takes place. There are some that believe 200 years in the future is correct, others who feel 300 years is about right. Well if ST takes place 200 years in the future, then the Valiant left Earth circa 1965-66, putting Kirk and company squarely in the 22nd century. Mankind had not landed on the moon in 1965, let alone sent a ship and crew out of our own solar system. If we put Kirk in the 23rd century, then the Valiant blasted off somewhere around 2065. Of course this doesn't address the problem of the Eugenics War and of Khan blasting off in his sleeper ship in 1996. But that's another episode. One of course could argue that ST takes place in a timeline different from our own. Even if that were true, the events of Operation:Earth show that the 1960's in Kirk's timeline did not yet have space travel. Got all that?

Something Completely Different
One thing you will notice in this pilot is that the Enterprise looks a little different. And one thing I like are some of the different camera angles they shot from. Check it out.

Note the strange partitions in the ceiling in both these pics, and the ladder in the corridor on the right that we will never see as part of the ship again.

Here we see the ceiling in the conference room. This is probably one of the last times you will see a ceiling anywhere on the Enterprise.

A rare overhead shot of Kirk and Spock about to enter the turbo-lift. They rarely did shots like these, something a little different about the pilot.

Another rare camera angle, this time of Kirk entering the bridge from the turbo-lift. You can see the ceiling in this angle.
