Pumpkin's Story...
Hi.  My name is Pumpkin.  I’m a very friendly 1 year old dilute orange short haired male cat.  I hope it doesn’t sound like I’m bragging but people say I’m very pretty.  I guess because I’m a boy I should say handsome.

When I was a kitten I did have a nice home with people.  One day my people put me outside, something they had never done before.  It was exciting for a while but when I cried to come back in the house they wouldn’t open the door.  I hung around the door but whenever my people would go in or out they wouldn’t let me back in the house and wouldn’t even pet me or talk to me.  I hadn’t done anything bad and couldn’t figure out why they were doing this.  I was very hungry and afraid and didn’t know what to do.

I finally ended up living with some other outside cats.  Most of them were afraid of people because they had been chased and sometimes people even tried to hurt them.  It wasn’t anything like having a home; we were out in the rain and the cold and when it got real hot.  Some of the cats tried to get food from garbage bins or caught mice to eat. Once in a while we’d find places where nice people would put out food and water for us.  The cats I was hanging around with told me lots of cats and dogs have to live like this.  I don’t understand why because so many people don’t have a cat or dog for company.

Then one day I really lucked out.  I found a couple that had some cats and a dog that lived in their home and they fed homeless cats on their porch.  They even had little houses for the cats to get out of the weather.  The lady took me to a veterinarian to have me checked out.  After the vet had finished checking me and done a blood test my new lady and the vet talked and the lady started to cry. It turned out she was crying about me because the vet told her I had feline leukemia and I should be put to sleep.  I don’t know why because I wasn’t tired and would be too nervous to sleep at the vet’s office anyway.  She took me home and put me in the garage because she didn’t want me to be outside and didn’t want me to be with their other cats.  I don’t understand why because while being outside all the time can be scary sometimes and I’ve gotten pretty used to being with other cats its not much fun living in a garage.

I like my new couple and their friends but my new lady said she wants to find me a home where I would be the only cat and would be kept indoors all the time.  She said it would also be all right if she found me a home where the other cat(s) in the home had feline leukemia.  I don’t even know what feline leukemia is but I guess it’s not something good.  I remember the vet told my lady that feline leukemia was contagious to other cats but not to people or other animals.
