The East Carson River above Hangman's Bridge gets
planted frequently (a put-and-take fishery) but it hosts some
big wild Browns in the Fall, and some monster Whitefish too. The California record Mountain Whitefish (1lb 8oz) was taken up here in 1994, but bigger ones lurk!. The river is easily accessable,
since Highway 89/Highway 4 follows it upstream from Hangman's Bridge
to the Centerville Flat camping area. Here, if you take the turn to Wolf Creek,
you follow the river again for a half-mile before the road climbs out of the
canyon. There are many places to pull over and park to walk to the nearest fishing hole. On a summer weekend, you will find a vehicle
or two in every turn-out, and a fisherman in nearly every hole (usually
using worms, salmon eggs, or Powerbait). This is a great place to relax,
visit with other fishermen, have a brewski, and enjoy the scenery.
I flyfish this water when levels are too high to wade the lower East Carson. A #6 black Wooly Bugger on a sink-tip line can fool those hatchery Rainbows. October I venture up here again, to look at the changing Fall colors, fish the October Caddis hatch or midge for pre-spawning Browns. And it's fun to explore the riffles with a #14 Royal Wulff or toss a Hopper pattern on a hot August day. There's not much to know about this section, because what you see (from the road) is what you get. You could call DFG or the Alpine County Chamber of Commerce to determine the planting schedule, but I'm not here to encourage you to chase hatchery trucks! Since Powerbait works in high muddy water, you probably don't need information on water flows. I suggest you just go enjoy this section!
