I recently received a MIDI authoring program which allows the user to score MIDI events (notes) in a graphical interface. The notes are not placed on a music staff and with my Mac's sound turned off I had no idea what notes I was laying down. This seemed to me like a pretty good analogy for life. We make choices based on individual events in our lives but with our limited perceptual abilities it often appears that our choices are random; controlled more by circumstance than design.
I placed the notes on the graph and assigned a couple of instruments to play them. The resulting melody was both beautiful and disturbing; an appropriate representation of the events in my life. I have to confess that I succumbed to the rather anal urge to add the last two notes after the fact. This gave it a feeling of completeness. A more philosophical approach might have been to loop it an infinite number of times but that would have been a bit annoying.
