A Lineup of Rare Movies New Capsule Reviews & More Titles How to order? - See bottom of this page. NORLISS TAPES UPGRADED Oct. 2002 - MINT PRINT! Don't miss! Refresh your copy of this top notch shocker. Starring Roy Thinnes. WOMAN ON THE RUN (Universal, 1950) Rare film noir. Artist who goes into hiding after witnessing a mob murder. Directed by Orson Welles collaborator Norman Foster. The exciting climax was supposedly shot on-location at Playland-at-the-Beach (actually looks more like Santa Cruz Boardwalk!) as a nod to Welles' head-on conclusion shot at ) Playland's Fun House in LADY FROM SHANGHAI (1948). Ann Sheridan, Dennis O'Keefe and Robert Keith star. 78 min. QUEEN OF SPADES Robert Bloch (THRILLER, HITCHCOCK series' writer) included Queen of Spades in his top 10 list of scary movie scenes. ![]() "The Queen of Spades" reminds viewers of "The Haunting" based on the Shirley Jackson novel. Has the conniving Capt. Suvorin, portrayed by Anton Walbrook, completely lost his mind or actually traded his soul to the devil? Brilliantly directed by Thorold Dickinson, 8 years after directing GASLIGHT also starring Walbrook. The impressionist cinematography by Otto Heller is intoxicatingly atmospheric. Heller also shot 'The Ladykillers', Peeping Tom' and those three classic Michael Caine films of the 60s, The 'Ipcress File', 'Alfie' and 'Funeral In Berlin.' BLACK MAGIC Orson Welles is mesmerizing and perfectly suited to the role of Count Cagliostro. He has waited silently for over 20 years secretly planning revenge on the ruling class he holds responsible for the drunken public execution of his Mother he witnessed as a boy. Is Cagliostro an ambitious Gypsy charlatan or a demonic master of the black arts? There are many incredible scenes throughout, and it has threads in common with "The Prisoner in the Mirror" THRILLER TV episode, also with a magician known as Cagliostro. The real mystery is why such an enjoyable movie was dismissed as something of little importance. It's my favorite off-beat Welles film. Welles co-directed, though was uncredited. DANTE'S INFERNO The incredible footage of souls in the pits of hell was filmed in Italy circa 1922. Spencer Tracy's "fun house" is anything but! NIGHTMARE ALLEY Unbelievably hard to find, will the DVD ever be released? The noirest of noir films! The seedy side of side shows starring Tyrone Power playing down his handsome leading man status. Moral of the story... raw chicken is not sushi. KONGO Unfamiliar to most genre buffs, yet well worth seeing, this 1932 voodoo horror starring Walter Huston as the sadistic life of the party bent on taking bizarre revenge on the man that added insult to injury -- first he broke his spine and then..."he sneered"... those 2 words posted for all foolish enough to come anywhere near him to read, again and again... This overlooked oddity was a remake of Lon Chaney''s WEST OF ZANZIBAR. CHANDU THE MAGICIAN Bela Lugosi is a madman with a death ray and he wants to destroy the world. Rare 1932 Fox feature film with lots of atmosphere- this is not one of the lesser CHANDU sequels edited from serials. THE WALKING DEAD Boris Karloff gets a raw deal when framed for a murder. A whirl in the electric chair is not enough to keep a good man down. Michael Curtiz directs from the shadows of Warner. CRY OF THE WEREWOLF Nina Foch stars. Hard to find Golden Age horror film. Excellent print! 50's B movie gems: THE LINE-UP Great cast of character actors in this tense crime suspenser directed by Don Siegel (INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS) Shot on location in San Francisco, bygone sights are seen throughout the car chase through town, wild enough to rival BULLITT (Steve McQueen). 10 minutes take place inside and around the legendary Sutro Museum... amazing footage that includes the huge staircases, penny arcade, ice rink, maritime exhibit and other oddities Stars Eli Wallach (THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY) Vaughn Taylor (JAIL HOUSE ROCK; Thriller:"Cousin Tundifer", Twilight Zone: "Self-Improvement of Salvadore Ross"; Outer Limits: "The Guests") Robert Keith (THE WILD ONE; Twilight Zone:"The Masks"; and Richard Jaeckel (GREEN SLIME) THE NIGHT HOLDS TERROR John Cassavettes, Vince Edwards. 3 hoodlums kidnap a man and terrorize his family. Excellent print. MAN AND THE MONSTER Mexican chiller has plenty of eerie scenes. The wolfman make-up is average, but the surreal and morbid style of horror is well worth a close look. With the star from THE BRAINIAC. English dubbed and Spanish language versions (with better music cues) available. 4-D MAN Robert Lansing stars in this under rated sci-fi gem. FOUR SKULLS OF JONATHAN DRAKE Interesting and more than a little creepy. Directed by Ed Cahn who also did the SHE CREATURE. The erudite voodoo doctor is played by sinister Henry Daniell ("The Cheaters", "Well of Doom"). Original theatrical prevue of this movie at tape's end. SHE CREATURE Edward Cahn's unusual '50s horror movie centers more on the unsavory businessmen who exploit the creature than on the monster itself. She broke a lot of hearts though, and still inspires merchandise of high quality. Paul Blaisdell's beastie is one of the '50s most memorable. THE VAMPIRE 1958 excellent realistic chiller. John Beal as the pitiful pill- popping blood fiend. The cocktail lounge scene with Beal nervously diverting his nurse's attention while stealing a refill from her handbag recalls a similar tragicomic moment in the acclaimed LOST WEEKEND with Ray Milland..."Somebody stole my purse..." Original theatrical prevue of this movie at tape's end. THE VAMPIRE In 1957 Mexico began it's tribute to the 1930's Universal monsters with this surprisingly atmospheric chiller. English language. THE HYPNOTIC EYE Talk about twisted...guilty pleasures galore. Favorite scene: The woman setting her hair on fire after leaning obliviously over her gas oven burner, believing until too late that she was rinsing off in the kitchen sink. Oops! Original theatrical prevue of this movie at tape's end. MACABRE William Castle's first movie to offer a gimmick: Lloyds of London insurance forms "guaranteeing" $1,000,000 ppayable to the surviving family of anyone dying of fright in the theatre. MACABRE'S prevues ruled out suicide as a way to "collect", good thing Castle thought of THAT one! While no one ever died of fright watching the movie by a long shot, nevertheless a rather sudden appearence by a rotting cadaver still jolts viewers who've managed to stay awake up 'til then. Original theatrical prevue of this movie at tape's end. RETURN OF DRACULA Francis Lederer as a more laid back though plenty thirsty fly-by-night Count. Original theatrical prevue of this movie at tape's end. TERROR FROM THE YEAR 5,000 Nasty alien woman gets her kicks trying to tear people's eyes out. Not a pretty sight. Original theatrical prevue of this movie at tape's end.
60's FLIX: BLACK SABBATH One time rare televised tribute to this Bava classic, includes the complete o.p. AIP version of Black Sabbath along with a wild mix of vintage trailers and all introduced by a cool Horror Host on "The Late Late, Late Show". 2 Hours total. In black plastic case with printed labels. Rare ltd. edition, a real curiosity for those that have every other variation of this Boris Karloff Thriller-inspired trio of terror tales. Still not safe to watch alone late at night, especially if you suffer from leaky faucets, pesky flies, late night crank calls and the like. I made the mistake of watching SABBATH for the first time in 1969, late at night while staying alone in my Grandmother's house, on the livingroom couch where I had just watched the movie on a very old TV set, unused to staying there, unused to shapes and shadows barely visible in the dark room. A rocking chair in the corner creaked ever so gently as the floorboards and I settled in for a very long night. Worth every minute of it, now that it's over! CONFESSIONS OF AN OPIUM EATER Vincent Price plays it cool and understated. Hard to find, it's a guilty pleasure worth finding. Includes an out of control hallucinatory dream sequence. Original theatrical prevue of this movie at tape's end. CURSE OF THE DOLL PEOPLE Bizarre little movie from south of the border, worth seeing. DARK INTRUDER Chilling 1964 gem with Leslie Nielsen battling a terrifying demon ho takes over the souls of the unwary. Great low-budget effects. EAT THE DOCUMENT The long unreleased 1966 UK tour rockumentary captures Bob Dylan & The Band at the height of their powers. With Johnny Cash, John Lennon -"Come, come Bob, it's only a film. Money-money, that'll get your head up!" GIRL IN GOLD BOOTS Haunted House niteclub never has a dull moment with its souped up troop of go go dancers. Something goes wrong, as things in any movie directed by Ted Mikels usually do. Color. HOMICIDAL The sickest of William Castle's '60s films... Some viewers didn't take Castle's warning seriously, and are serving life-sentences in the "coward's corner" for the heineous crime of revealing the twist ending. Pristine print. Original theatrical prevue of this movie at tape's end. I HATE YOUR GUTS William Shatner as a rascist agitator in this drive-in version of The Intruder JOURNEY INTO MIDNIGHT (From '68 U.K. TV series) JOURNEY TO THE 7th PLANET interesting story and decent effects. KILL, BABY KILL Bava followed up BLACK SABBATH in a round about way with this spooky ghost story. In color. Good one. LORD LOVE A DUCK -Roddy McDowell frantic '60s cool comedy rave, a precursor to Roddy's equally twisted follow-up: THE COOL ONES scenes of which are included along with trailers at tape's end. MR. SARDONICUS William Castle's hair-raising grimmace gimmick with theatrical "thumbs down!" included). Original trailers at tape's end. NIGHT CREATURES Peter Cushing stars in this rare Hammer movie from 1962. Original theatrical prevue of this movie at tape's end. NORLISS TAPES UPGRADE- MINT PRINT!! Don't miss this solid shocker, starring the rugged Roy Thinnes. Fists-first demon with an attitude is not one you'd want to meet by surprise in your carport, etc. RIOT ON SUNSET STRIP Wow, a pristine print of classic '60s rock rebellion flick. Worthy for the outstanding performances by The Chocolate Watchband, and The Standells. Original theatrical prevue of this movie at tape's end. THE SORCERERS Boris Karloff in one of his very best late '60s films. Directed by Michael Reeves (Witchfinder General, She-Beast) Pristine color print. Great UK freak beat bands perform in it too. Original theatrical prevue of this movie at tape's end. THE TIME TRAVELLERS Wild romp through time and space, with 4E Ackerman in a bit part. Pristine print.
