Terry. What can I say about Terry? I love listening to Terry because I never know what to expect but I know it will have humor and make me think. He gets up in front of the audience and haltingly stammers
to a start and before you know it you are laughing at his unique perspective. Just about then Terry hits
you with these thoughts and ideas that make you realize there is so much more to his work than just
humor. He tells such great stories, stories that I can put myself into. From the insane kiss up world
of the office, where humiliating co-workers on their birthday is considered top form, to his insights into
the life of an aging rocker, Terry makes you laugh and think at the same time. Still, much as I love his
stories, I think I really like his love poems better. They are simple, funny and in their own way deeply moving. Terry gets more out of a few words than most poets get out of a lot.
That's Terry the poet but there is also Terry, the man. Terry tries very hard to live up to his ideals
and he is more than willing to take a stand, even if that means standing alone or taking on the
powerful. Terry is a great friend. When times were tough for me, he was one of my strongest
backers. When I needed favors, Terry always came through. When I needed help, Terry was always
there. When a cause needs a defender there are not many better than Terry.
His love for his wife comes through in everything he does but it stands out most in those poems that
celebrate his carelessness except in regard to his love for her. There is a glow that comes across him
when he reads those pieces about her.
Still the thing about Terry is those stories. The impact an orange can make on your life, Laguna
Beach as hell for some people, and the classic job interview are just a few of my favorite stories.
Still just when I've seen the extent of Terry's range, in he comes with a piece that just blows me away
because it is so different and unexpected like his piece about school shootings and his unique view
of it. Just when you start to think all Terry does is make people laugh, he comes up with a piece
that tugs at your heart or warms it.
Terry has his own style. Terry is his own man. Terry is a voice worth hearing.
