I am assuming that since you are here you are interested in becoming a Christian. First let me explain a few misconceptions about Christians. A person is not a Christian because they were born in the United States or their family attends church or they are members of a particular church. A person is not a Christian because they live a good life or keep the 10 Commandments and the Golden Rule and they are not a Christian because God healed them of some serious illness or brought them through some trying circumstances. Just because your mother or father was a Christian or your grandfather was a preacher does not mean that you are a Christian either. A Christian is someone who has a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. How do they have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ? There are several very simple steps to becoming a Christian.
1. You need to realize that you are a sinner. All of us have sinned. The Bible says we have all sinned and come short of the glory of God (Rom3:23) It also tells us that the wages of sin is death. (Rom 6:23) That means that unless we do something we are headed straight for hell.
2. God loves you and doesn’t want you to go to hell. He has provided a way for you to enjoy eternal life with Him in heaven. He did this by sending His only begotten Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross to pay for our sins. (John 3:16) Why did he have to die on the Cross? Because the wages of sin is death. He took our place by dying on the cross.
3. We can receive this gift by acknowledging to God that we are sinners and asking Christ to forgive our sins and take control of our life. If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord (God) and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead you will be saved. (Rom 10:9)
4. If you would like to receive Christ just simply bow your head and pray a prayer something like this. "Lord I know I'm a sinner and I accept your death on the cross as payment for my sin. Please come into my life and make me what you want me to be.
5. If you prayed that prayer and you meant it then Christ will come into your life and give you eternal life. So what do you do now?
Steps for Growth:
1. Once we have done this Christ commands us to take up our cross daily and follow Him. We begin doing this by first sharing our decision to follow Christ with others and by being baptized. Baptism does not save you but it does demonstrate to others your desire to obey Christ in all things.
2. It is also important that you join in the fellowship of a local Bible believing church. If you do not have a Bible, get one and begin reading it on a daily basis. I recommend you start with the Gospel of John and then read the rest of the New Testament. Join a Bible study group or Sunday School class in your church and take advantage of other training opportunities that your church offers you. But most of all Read your Bible daily and learn to pray daily. Prayer is just talking to God. You don’t have to use any special words just tell Him what is on your heart. You will be amazed how simple it is.
