GOLIAD COUNTY

Named for "anagram" of Hidalgo
County Seat: Goliad Area: 859 square miles Pop. (2000): 6,928
While Goliad County does not have an official flag, both the City and the County of Goliad have traditionally flown the "Bloody Arm" flag of the Texas Revolution. This flag is white and bears as its charge a human arm severed at the shoulder, with a long sword clenched in its hand, all in red. The flag signifies that Texans would sooner lose an arm than live under tyranny and was initially hoisted in Goliad following the first Texas Declaration of Independence on 20 December 1835.

Another flag present at the Battle of Goliad was that designed by Joanna Troutman, carried by Georgia volunteers. The reverse of the flag bore the inscription, in Latin, Where Liberty Dwells, There is Our Home.
