WARD COUNTY

Named for Thomas W. Ward (1807-1872), Texas Patriot
County Seat: Monahans Area: 836 square miles Pop. (2000): 10,909
As a result of inquiries regarding the County Flags of Texas, Ward County Clerk Pat V. Finley was motivated to initiate proceedings to design and adopt a flag for the county. The Ward County Historical Commission sponsored a contest open to the general public and received about 65 entries. The winning entry, submitted by Carolyn Hunter, displayed a blue map of the roughly triangular county with white stars geographically placed to represent each of its seven cities and towns. The remainder of the field was red, with a white strip representing the Pecos River separating the two main sections of the flag. The Commissioners' Court added the white ring and star, taken from Ms. Finley's entry, to the lower left of the flag before unanimously adopting this design on 26 August 1991.
Ms. Hunter explained her choice of symbols as "seven towns of integrity shining in a county of honesty, bordered by a meandering river of integrity, [joining] a State to face the future with courage."
The date on the ring, 1892, recalls the year that Ward County was organized.
