Welcome... this is a site that hopes to have the name of every town...

that ever existed in Hidalgo County. If you've found one that you feel should be added to the list please e-mail the information to me at TexMexGenealogy@dummyaol.com citing your sources, and i'll cite you as the source.

My goal is to have the following for each place name presented to you in this order: former name; also known as name; later name; present name; place names it includes; for those on a county line, the counties it is part of; location; incorporation date; railroad name; if it had a US Post Offices 1859/60; if it was listed as a town in the 1880 US Census; Post Office years of operation with current Zip Code; population

Do you have the name of a place name and you aren't sure which county it belongs in? Then please read this paragraph. You should first visit another web page i've set up, "Texas Family History: Place Names of the 52 Southern Counties," which has the place names grouped by county, and use your Ctrl/f function to search for the place name, if it isn't there, it might be here. Careful... the spelling on a map may be wrong (you can't copyright a perfect map so mapmakers incorporate a minimal number of errors to prevent their competition from copying their research, hence roads and places that don't exist and misspellings) and common names are frequently repeated, so relying on a new road map to find old place names is a sure way to invite troubles. Many place names have changed their names over the years and until the early 20th century there was no control over naming a town large enough to have a Post Office, so common names were often repeated throughout the state and ocassionally within the same county. After compiling a list of towns your ancestors lived in from old letters and documents and listing the possible counties, you may be surprized to find you've been looking in the wrong counties. Looking in the wrong county is the most common error made in researching your family roots, so hopefully this listing will enable you to walk around those brick walls that have been blocking your progress. Thousands of researchers have come to me over the years for advice and assistance, as i am a professional researcher, and the most common mistake they've made is in chosing the right place, but it is in the wrong county.

All i ask from anyone who visits here is... please tell me if something is not right... whether it's a spelling error or not in alphabetical order. We can strive for perfection without expecting to be perfect... i would never want to mislead anyone by purposely offering wrong information. If an older town is missing from any of the counties and you know it... please send me an e-mail telling me as much about it as you know and please cite your sources... even if your memory is the only source and i'll list you and your e-mail address as the source. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Although i pay for AOL service i rarely use their browser as Internet Explorer works better, so when i visit my own sites but have found a trick that works wonders: Whenever AOL sends me a message that it is too busy and asks me to come back later i tap a few times rapidly on my "Refresh" button... and presto!... it wakes someone up and i immediately get in... to wait a minute or more for the download!

Key to codes used in Place Names of Hidalgo County:

Blvd = boulevard
Bus Hwy 83 = Business Hwy 83
colonia = colony (illegally created community, usually substandard)
EDA = Economically Disadvantaged Area (Colonia designation by US agencies)
Exp 83 = Expressway 83 (not quite built to Interstate standards)
FHLC = Family History Library Catalog (CD program used in Family History Centers)
FM = Farm to Market (rural road designation by Texas Highway Department)
Hwy = highway
inc = incorporated
MH = mobile home
PM = postmaster
PO = Post Office
RFD = Rural Free Delivery
RR = railroad (for a list of those in operation look under railroad below)
RT = Route (postal designation)
RV = recreation vehicle

note: Although we commonly use the abbreviations of Ft for Fort, Mt for Mount, St for Saint; Ste for Sainte, they usually aren't used here in any of the place names for a couple of simple reasons... doing so would make it too hard to keep place names in alphabetical order and this enables you to quickly search for them by using your Ctrl + f keys.

tip: use your Ctrl/f keys to quickly locate the word you are looking for... if it is a long, or hard to spell, name you shouldn't type all of it, just the first few should work... and a search only takes half a second.
