There are many capable programmers but without proper planning and analysis, you could end up with duplicated efforts.
For example, I recently analyzed the relationship between a Client's inventory and work order systems. It was designed so that when materials were posted to the work order they could automatically be deducted from inventory. The warehouse wanted inventory to be reduced as soon as materials were issued.
I reversed the design so that the inventory was reduced when the materials were issued. If they were issued against a work order, the materials were automatically posted to the work order record. The new procedure provides these benefits:
- Errors from incorrect part numbers and forgotten items are eliminated.
- Work orders are not used as inventory input documents.
- Part numbers do not have to be entered twice.
- Inventory is adjusted as soon as materials are issued.
- Accurate descriptions, quantities and costs are posted to the work order record.
