Animal Abuse Cases
OPOSSUM KILLER GOES FREE

Despite a flood of letters and phone calls urging felony animal cruelty
charges against James Broomall (see Issue 191), a Los Angeles
County jury found him not guilty of even misdemeanor animal cruelty for
maliciously killing an opossum.
Broomall testified that he used a crossbow to shoot three arrows into an
opossum and then, with the assistance of his teenage stepson, tracked the
poor animal down and killed her with a shovel. According to the Whittier
Daily News, Broomall also admitted to killing two other opossums by
dousing them with gasoline and setting them on fire.
While it is difficult to assign blame in the outcome of this case, it is
important to express our profound disappointment to the Los Angeles
District Attorney. Not only did a blatant act of animal cruelty go
unpunished, but the verdict sends a dangerous message that California's
wild animals (and particularly opossums) are not protected from even the
most unjustified and vicious forms of animal cruelty.
