His middle name is that of his relative Joseph Winge whom Aloys probably never knew. At this point I do not know who else in the family had the name Aloys, but it was common in Silesia.

The 1890 Census was destoyed; only summaries and non-personal information is available. However the 1890 St. Louis Directory shows Al's father, William Winge, a carpenter, living at 3742 Oregon Ave. The 1891 Directory shows the father as a cabinet maker, living at the same address.
Brother Johann (John) Winge (-2G) was born on 21 Nov. 1892 in St. Louis.
The 1892 Directory shows him as a cabinet maker, living on the north side of Neosho, near 16th St. The 1893 and 1894 Directories list him as a carpenter living on the north side of Neosho, near 17th St.
Brother Theodore Winge (-2G) was born on 14 May 1894 in St. Louis.
The 1895 Directory calls him a cabinet maker, living at the same address. The 1896 Directory also calls him a cabinet maker, but he is living at 4449 S. 17th St. The 1897-99 Directories list William, cabinet maker, living at 4460 S. 17th St.

On the left porch we see what appears to be Al's parents, William and his wife Martha (older people on the right). The two younger women on the left side of the porch may be Al's sisters, Hedwig and Adeline. The two girls in front of the house may be the younger daughters Frances and Emma. I do not know the man with the cow. Dated ca 1894-97. |

Aloys is 9 years old and is at school. His father Wilhelm was born in Dec. 1851 in Germany and is 48 years old. His occupation is cabinet maker, he can read and write inc. English. He owns his house at 4460 South 17th St. in St. Louis. He has been in the U.S. for 20 years. Aloys' mother Martha is 42 years old, born in Sept. of 1854 in Germany, her parents also born in Germany. Also listed is Aloys' sister Adelheid, born in Apr 1880 which disagrees with other sources. Adelheid (later called Adeline) is a dressmaker and her birthplace is Germany. A brother Wilhelm (later called William) was born May 1883 in Missouri, is 17 years old, but was not at school. A sister Francis (sic!, Frances) was born Oct. 1886 in Missouri, is 13 years old, and was at school. A sister Emma was born Sept. 1888 in Missouri, is 11 years old, and was at school. A brother Johann (later called John) was 7, was born in Nov. 1892, and was at school. A brother Theodore was 6, born in Missouri in May 1894, but was not at school. Sister Martha, who came over on the ship, died before 1900.
When his sister Adeline got married (20 Dec. 1904), Aloys was living with his parents and siblings Emma, Johann, and Theodore at 4460 S. 17th St. in St. Louis.

Aloys is the boy seated in the front row. His father, Wilhelm, is the bearded man, seated in the front on our right. His mother, Martha, is the older woman on our front left, seated. He is listed as Aloris in the 1910 Fed. Census for Missouri (e.d. 206, sheet 198). He is living with his parents and some siblings in St. Louis. He is 19 years old and has an occupation as cabinet maker. His name is misspelled as Aloris. His father is 58 years old and is now called "William". Also listed are Aloys' mother Martha (55), sister Emma (21), brother Johann (17), and brother Theod (Theodore, 16). [Brother William and sisters Adeline and Hedwig are married and Francis is either married or is living on her own.] The parents Martha and William have been married 33 years; she gave birth 11 times but 8 children are living; little Martha, and two unknown others, died early, probably before 1900. Wilhelm and son Aloys are listed as cabinet makers. Emma is listed as a helper to her mother. Johann (John) is listed as an apprentice (field is not readable) and Theodore is listed as a cabinet maker apprentice.

On 05 June 1917 Aloys Winge registered for WWI service with draft board 13 in precinct 12 of St. Louis (roll 1683752, card 127). At this time he is 26 years old and was born on 26 Nov. 1890 in St. Louis. He is a draftsman at Independant Brg. Co. in St. Louis. He is married and has a wife and child dependant on him. He has not served in the military before. His address at this time is 3629a Hydraulic Ave. in St. Louis, MO. He is of short height, medium built and has gray eyes and brown hair.
The 1918 Dir. has Alois J. Winge, drftsmn at Independent B. Co., r4433 Chippewa.
The 1920 Fed. Census for Missouri lists Aloys in vol. 98, district 249, sheet 7, line 42. He is 28 years old, born in Missouri, and is residing at 4401 Virginia Ave. in St. Louis. His wife Bertha (25), daughter Lois (2), and sister-in-law Lillian Battefeld (27) are living with him. All were born in Missouri.

Co., living at 3700 Bamberger. The 1925 Dir. shows Aloys J. Winge, sec. at Herbst Fixture Co., living at 3700 Bamberger Ave. The 1926 and 1927 Directories have the same information.

Census for Missouri (T626_1235, enum. dist. 491, supv. dist. 9, page 21B, lines 67-70, house 295, family 447) lists Aloys Winge, 39 years old, living in St. Louis (city) at 3700 Bamberger Ave. in block 5624 of ward 13. He was born in Missouri and his parents were born in Germany. He was married at age 24. He is not in school but can read, write, and speak English. He occupation is draftsman for fixtures [?]. He was not a war veteran. His wife, Bertha, is 36 years old, born in Missouri of parents born in Missouri. She was married at age 21. She is not in school but can read, write, and speak English. No occupation is listed for her. They own the house which is valued at $7,000 and they have a radio. We also see their daughter Lois, 13, and son, William, 3, both born in Missouri with parents born in Missouri. William is not in school but Lois is in school and can read, write, and speak English. No occupation is listed for the children.

The 1936 St. Louis Dir. shows Aloys J. (Bertha) Winge, sec. Century Woodworking Co. Inc., with a home at 3700 Bamberger.
His S.S. application, dated 15 Jan., 1937 , gives his address as 3700 Bamberger Ave. in St. Louis, MO. His number is 497-09-0301 which was issued in Missouri. At the time of his application, he is working for Century Woodworking Co., Inc. at 4217 N. Market St. in St. Louis, MO. His middle name is given as Joseph. His father's name is given as William, but his mother's is given as Deichgraber [should be Teichgräber]. Although I know that is not correct, it raised my curiosity because there are some people with that spelling in the IGI index. His first name is spelled and signed as Aloys. He is 46 years old and the birth date and place is given.
The 1937 St. Louis Directory lists Aloys J. Winge (with wife Bertha) working for Century Woodworking Co. and having a home at 3700 Bamberger.

The St. Louis City Directory of 1941 shows Aloys and his wife Bertha living at 3700 Bamberger Ave. He is an estimator and draftsman for Maguolo Cabinet Co. The 1942 Dir. shows Aloys J. (Bertha) Winge, manager for Maguola Cabinet Co., with a home at 3700 Bamberger.
At the time his son William applied for Social Security (12 June 1942) the family was living at 3700 Bamberger Ave. in St. Louis.
He was the informant on his mother's death ( 2 Apr. 1944) certificate. At that time he was still living at 3700 Bamberger in St. Louis.

The 1946 St. Louis City Dir. shows Aloys J. (Bertha) Winge, general manager at Maguolo Cabinet Co., home at 3700 Bamberger. The 1946 County Dir (Polk) has Aloys J. Winge (no wife given), general manager of Maguola Cabinet Co., residence at Sappington Rd. 6.
Brother Johann (John) died on 12 Apr. 1947 in Whitfield, Miss.
The St. Louis County Directory of 1955 shows Aloys and his wife living on the south side [most likely 11032] of Gravois Rd. in Sappington. He is a draftsman at Lockman Cabinet. The County Dir. of 1958 shows Aloys and Bertha with the address of RD 6, Box 109 Gravois Rd. in Sappington. No mention is made of his work status. The County Dir. of 1961 shows Aloys, retired, and his wife Bertha living at 11032 Gravois Rd. in Sappington.

The 1969 County Dir. has Aloys J. (Bertha) Winge, retired, home at 11032 Gravois Rd. in Sappington.
