He was probably born in Minden, Germany. His parents and siblings are not yet verified.  The Petershagen/Minden records for St. Peter's protestant church show a Carl Heinrich Dake born on 01 Jan. 1825 and baptized on the 9th. His parents were Carl Heinrich Dake and Sophie Maria Hilkers. I am thinking that this Carl and our Charles Thake are one and the same. The surname "Dake" could be either an early form of the name or an interpretation by the priest of what he heard the parents tell him. The "D" and "T" sounds are quite close in sound. The "h" in "Thake" would be silent among German-speaking peoples.

A Sophie Louise Dake was born in Oct. of 1827 of Carl Heinrich Dake and Sophie Marie Hilker. She was baptized on the 14th. A Sophie Louise Thake of Minden married Heinrich Conrad Kramer on 20 May 1851 in St. Peter's Ev. Luth. Church in Minden. Her father was Carl Heinrich Thake of Minden. At the time of her marriage she was 23 years old which puts her birth in 1827/28. I think Sophie Louise is a sister of the Charles of this web page.

A Friedrich August Thake was baptized on 21 Dec. 1829 at St. Peter's Ev.-Ref. Church in Minden. The parents were Henirich Thacke and Sophie Hilkers (FHL film 1051925). I am thinking that Friedrich is a brother of the Charles of this web page.

He probably married ca. 1848-1850 in Minden. There was a Wilhelmine Charlotte Emilie Amelung who married a Carl Heinrich Take on 27 Jul. 1849 at the St. Marien Evang. Church in Minden (LDS film #0442163).

On the christening record of the son, Charles is listed as a clerk or record keeper for the railroad.  A rail line from Minden to Cologne was opened in 1848.  The son was christened at St. Peter's Evang.-Ref. Church in Minden on 6 Jul 1851.  The brother-in-law, Carl Amelung, who was a train driver (engineer), was the godfather.  The Thake family was living at house number 695 in Minden.

He and his wife (and perhaps their infant son, Eugene) left their city of Minden in Prussia, traveled to the port of Bremen, embarked on board the ship "Peter Godeffrey" and arrived in New Orleans on 15 Dec. 1851. Both Charles and Emily were 27 years old at the time and his occupation is given as engineer. Their destination is just given as U.S.A. Their son is not listed on the passenger list or in the index, the books "Germans to America".  This ship had 124 male passengers, 112 female passengers and 65 children.  Only 3 passengers died en route.  I also have the copy of the captain's list showing the names Charles and Emily. (LDS film #0200167 includes passenger lists through 15 Dec. 1851.)

In the death certificate of son Eugene, Chas. Thake is given as the father and Emilie as the mother.

On the Illinois State Census for 1855 (Oct.) there is listed a C. Thake (between 30 and 40) in Caseyville in St. Clair County. With him is a child below 10 years of age (no name given), a woman between 30 and 40 (no name given), and another man between 30 and 40 (no name given), for a grand total of 4.

A Charles Thake is in the 1860 Illinois census federal population schedule, p. 468. He is listed as residing in Twp. 2 North R 9 West which is in the Caseyville Post Office area. The ID is IL371172151 and the family number is 1329. The 1860 census gives his occupation as painter, the value of his real estate as $4000 and the value of his personal estate as $200. His country of birth is given as Prussia and his age as 35. His dwelling house number is given as 1318. With him are listed his wife Emilia (misspelling of Emilie) Thake (age 3x?, also born in Prussia) and an unknown 10 year old boy (Ayanious?, also born in Prussia). Perhaps this is the census taker's guess at the spelling of Eugen or is the Latin form of the name?

According to the book "Vivat Amerika", the son, Carl Eugen Victor Robert Thake, emigrated in 1864 from Minden county in Prussia.  Since the wife, Emilie, remarried in 15 Apr. 1865, Charles died before then. I wonder if the son ever got to know his father.  However a child under 10 is in the C. Thake household in Caseyville in 1855.  Also, the 1880 Census for St. Louis lists another Eugene Thake family with a different set of children.  One of the children is a Viktor Thake.  Perhaps Carl Eugen Victor Robert Thake is this Eugene Thake and not my great-grandfather.  Was the mother and father of this Eugene also named Emilie and Carl H.?  It is a puzzle still to be solved.

There was a Charles Thake who served as a private in the Union Army in 1861. Although our Charles Thake would be ca. 36 years old in 1861, I'm sure that many in their 30's did serve in that war. However I believe Private Thake was inducted in a different county than the one our Charles Thake lived.

There is a Charles Thake in the naturalization records of the courts in St. Louis (St. Louis City Common Pleas Court--Naturalization Records--Naturalization Cards, vol. R, p. 366). Only the country of origin (Germany) and the name are given. No date is given, no witnesses are given.

Diana Renner Walsh, a genealogist, looked for evidence of the death and burial of Charles Thake but found nothing. She looked in the following sources: Indexes to Translated Records of St. John's Evangelical UCC, Collinsville, IL [1895-1913]; College Hill Cemetery, Lebanon, St. Clair County, IL by Lyda Ruth Fleekert Lechring [2002]; published cemeteries of St. Clair County, searched by Chicit (SCCGS); findings of Doris Bauer, compiler of Glenwood Cemetery.
