  • The surname "Marty"
  • The given name "Frederick"
  • Listed on the St. Louis page
  • Listed on the California page
  • Included on the Winge Family Group Chart

His father, Joseph, was born in Switzerland ca. 1865; his mother, Rachel Eggler, in Switzerland. His father immigrated in 1880 according to the 1910 Census but I do not know the exact date, port, or ship name. He obviously lived in California ca 1888. Some families spelled their surname "Marti".

    -------------------------

Fred was born on 10 May 1888. His middle name is "Edward" according to his son's S.S. application form. Other sources suggest it was "Ernest". But "Ernest" could have been the middle name of another Fred Marty in St. Louis.

I am not certain that I found him and his parents in the 1900 Census. There is a Fritz E. Marty, 12 years old, born in May 1888 in California in the 1900 Census for St. Louis, MO (T623_890, enum. dist. 69, sheet 10A, dwelling 107, family 217). They are living at 507? South 2nd St. in ward 5 in the house of another Marty family, hence are called relatives. There are also many boarders in the building. Fritz's father is Joseph, 35 years old, born in Germany, immigrated in 1880. The father is a dairyman. Fritz's mother is Amelia, 28 years old, born in Missouri. Fred's father should have Switzerland as a birth-country, but instead has Germany. This could be the mistake of the Census taker or a confusion with the native language. The parents have been married 13 years and only had the one child. Everything else matches expectations. [Fritz is sometimes used as a nickname for Fredrick.] [Fred's death certificate says a Rachel Eggler was his mother.]

His mother, Rachel or Amelia?, died between 1900 and 1905, probably in Missouri. His father remarries--this time to a Bertha ca. 1905, probably in Missouri. I do not know her maiden name.

The 1910 Census for Missouri (T624_817, supv. dist. 10, enum. dist. 205, sheet 2A, stamped page 39A, dwelling 25, family 32, dated 18 Apr.) shows Fredrick E. Marty and his parents renting at 4401 Virginia in ward 13 of St. Louis. His father is Joseph, 44 years old, born in Switzerland with German as his mother-tongue, his parents also born in Switzerland--German speaking. He is a grocer. Joseph immigrated in 1880 and is naturalized. Fred's mother, Bertha, is 32 years old, born in Missouri, her father born in England, her mother in Missouri. They have been married 5 years which implies that Bertha is Fred's step-mother. Fredrick E. Marty is their only child, 21 years old, born in California. He is also a grocer, no doubt helping his father.

He married Emma A. Winge (-2G) on 27 May 1910. A Justice of the Peace performed the ceremony in St. Louis. She was 21, living at 4460 S. 17th St.; he was 22, living at 4400 (4401?) Virginia Ave. (application 157169, license vol. 73, page 204)

He had two children: Son Fred Joseph Marty (-1G) born in Missouri on 24 Jan. 1912 and Marie Marty (-1G) born in St. Louis on 17 June 1917.

The 1916 St. Louis Directory shows Frederick E. Marty, grocer, living at 4501 Virginia Ave.

Friederick E.Marty registered for the WWI draft on 05 Jun.1917? (roll 1683751, draft board 13, precinct 5 ward 13). He was born in Los Angeles, CA on 10 May 1888 and was 29 years old. His residence was 4501 Virginia in St. Louis and he owned a grocery business. He was of tall height and mecium build and had brown eyes and hair. He had not been in military service before and claims an exemption because of a dependant wife and child. This is the correct person.

There was another Fredric E. Marty who registered with the WWI draft on 05 Jun. 1917 (roll 1683748, draft board 11, card 19, form 1212). This one was born on 15 Aug. 1891 in Missouri and was 25 years old. He lived at 3302 Nebraska in St. Louis. He is a switchman for a railroad in Dupov, IL. This is not our Fred. This man died on 03 Oct. 1965, and was buried at Jefferson Barracks Cemetery (section H, site 860). He had the OS rank in the Navy and served from 07 Dec. 1917 to 13 Apr. 1918 which is the same time frame as the older man in the following paragraph.

This same Fred Ernist Marty enlisted in the Navy at the Recruiting Station in San Francisco, CA (service #116-28-29) on 07 Dec. 1917 when he was of the age 32 years and 3 months. At the time he gave his home address as 8243 Idaho Ave. in St. Louis. His rating (rank) was Landsman for Machinist Mate Aviation. From 07 Dec. 1917 to 25 Jan. 1918 he was assigned to the Naval Training Camp at San Diego. From 25 Jan. 1918 to 18 Feb. 1918 he was at the Naval Air Station in San Diego. From 18 eb. 1918 to 18 Apr. 1918 he was back at the Naval Training Camp in San Diego. These assignments totaled 127 days. His discharge was on 13 Apr. 1918. Because the age and address is different than those given for the grocer Fred Marty, this person is probably not our Fred.

The 1918 Dir. has Fredk Marty, gro, 4501 Virginia Av.

The 1920 Census in Missouri (vol. 98, district 249, sheet 7) list him, his wife and two children. They are living in their own house at 4501 Idaho Ave. in St. Louis. Frederick is 31, born in California. His mother was born in Missouri; his father in Switzerland. He is listed as a merchant who owns a grocery store. Emma is also 31 years old, born in Missouri. The two children were born in Missouri. They include son Fred. Jr (-1G), 7 years old, born in Missouri, and daughter Marie (-1G), 2 years old, also born in Missouri.

The 1924 St. Louis Directory has Fredk Marty, gro [grocer] at 4501 Virginia Ave., living at the same address. The 1925-27 Directories have the same information.

The 1930 Fed. Census for Missouri (T626_1235, enum. dist. 96-481, supv. dist. 9, printed page 237, sheet 9A, lines 27-30, house 135, family 242, dated April 7) show Fred and his family living at 4501 Virginia in St. Louis (ward 13, block 2697). Fred, is 42, was born in California of a father born in Switzerland and a mother born in Missouri. He is not in school but can read, write, and speak English. He was married at age 22. His occupation is manager at a grocery store. He was not a war veteran. They own their house which is valued at $30,000. It is not a farm. His wife, Emma, is 41 years old, born in Missouri, with parents born in Germany. She was married at age 21 and has two children. She is not in school but can read, write, and speak English. There is no listed occupation for Emma. Their son, Fred, is 18 years old, was born in Missouri of a father born in California and a mother born in Missouri. He is attending school and can read, write, and speak English. No occupation is listed for him. Their daughter Marie is 13 years old, born in Missouri of a father born in California and a mother born in Missouri. She is in school and can read, write, and speak English. She has no occupation. The family has a radio set.

There was a Fred Marty with the S.S. # 489-05-1268 who was born 15 Aug. 1891 and died Oct. 1965.  The card was issued 28 Nov. 1936 when he was living at 3007 South 18th St. in St. Louis and was working for Busch-Sulzer Bros. Diesel Engine Co. at Second and Utah Sts. in St. Louis. He was registered with the U. S. Employment Service as #70461  This is not the same person, and it is not even his son.  The mother of this person was Margaret Grabe and the father was Alfred Marty. It is possible that our Fred never had a Social Security card, especially since he was in business for himself. Our Fred. Marty is suppose to have had the S.S. #494-09-4328. He died before May 1972; his wife applied for benefits then using his number; she did not have a number of her own.

His step? mother, Bertha, died on 22 Feb. 1932 at her home, 4163a So. Compton in St. Louis. His father, Joseph, died on 25 May 1936 at his home, 4163a So. Compton. Both were buried in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery.

The 1936 St. Louis Dir. has Fredk (Emma) Marty, grocer at 4501 Virginia, home at the same address. The 1937 St. Louis Directory shows Fred Marty (with wife Erma [sic!]), a grocer at 4501 Virginia Ave. and a home at the same address.

On 8 June 1937 his son was working for the Fred. Marty Grocery & Meat Co. (according to the son's S. S. application) which may be his father's business. The son was living at 4501a (4401a?) Virginia Ave. in St. Louis, which is upstairs from the store. His parents and sister may be living there too.

The 1939 Directory shows Fred Marty (with wife Emma) a grocer at 4501 Virginia and a home at the same address.

The 1942 St. Louis Dir. has Fred E. Marty, pres-treas of Assoc. Grocers Co. of St. Louis, with a home at 4501 Virginia Ave. A Fred E. Marty is listed in the 1946 St. Louis County Dir. (Polk), machinist at Fulton Iron Wks Co. (no wife or home is listed). The 1946 St. Louis (city) Dir. has Fred (Emma) Marty, pres-treas. Assoc. Grocers Co. of St. Louis, home at 4501a Virginia Ave.

According to the Marty grave monument in Sunset Memorial Park, he died on 01 Jan. 1947. His obituary appears in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on 03 Jan. 1947 on page 8C. He died at home, 4501a Virginia at 11:55 PM. The obit names Emma (née Winge) as his wife. The obituary names his two children: Fred (Jr.) and Marie M. It also says he was a brother-in-law, a father-in-law, grandfather, and uncle. He was a member of Tower Grove Lodge No. 631of the Ancient, Free, and Accepted Masons; the Missouri Chapter of Royal Arch Masons; St. Louis Commanderry Knights Templar; Moolah Temple; and President of Associated Grocers Co. The funeral was from the Schumacher Funeral Home 3013 Meramec St. on Mon. 06 Jan. [1947] at 1:30 PM to Sunset Burial Park.

The death certificate (in MO Archives #2858) says he died on 01 Jan. 1947 at 11:55 PM (almost on the 2nd of Jan.) at home (4501 Virginia in St. Louis). Cause of death was myocardial failure contributed by arteriosclerotic heart disease. He was 58 years, 7 months, 13 days of age, having been born on 18 May 1888 in Los Angeles, CA. His parents were Joseph Marty and Rachel Eggler; both born in Switzerland. His usual occupation was Press. [President?] of A. G. Assnist. [Association?]. Doctor was Robert M. Keller at 3284 Ivanhoe. The funeral home was Wm. Schumacher at 3013 Meramec St. and burial was at Sunset Burial Park on 06 Jan. Informant was his wife, Emma.

Here is the Marty lot monument-stone in Sunset memorial Park, St. Louis. We see the graves of Fred, his wife, and daughter. Fred is buried in the middle. Click on the thumbnail to enlarge.

    --------------------

His daughter Marie died on 30 (or 10) Jan. 1971 in St. Louis. She did not marry or have children. His wife Emma died on 09 Jul. 1980 in St. Louis. His son Fred (Jr.) died on 16 Oct. 1992.

A Fred E. Marty is listed in a directory as a contractor with a home at the rear of 3007 S. 18th. However he is most likely not our Fred, nor his son.
