The (-2G), etc., after the names indicates the number of generations before Erven Thoma.

His sister, Sophia, was born ca. 1867 in Missouri. She is included in the 1880 Census. She probably married (after 1886) because the obituary of Frederick mentions a brother-in-law. He may have also had a sister named Marguerite, but I need more evidence. His name has also been spelled Fredrick. The latter is the spelling used by his son Erven. His middle name is after his father. Both his parents were born in Mecklenburg, Germany. Margaret is listed in the St. Louis City Directory.

His father is listed in the 1865 St. Louis Directory as a cabinet maker, residing at 61 Jefferson. In 1866 there is no listing. The 1867 Dir. has Henry Sandharr (sic!) listed as a sash and door maker at Garnett and Withington, residing at 915 Jefferson. The 1868 Dir. has Henry Sandherr, carpenter, res. at 915 Jefferson. There is no listing in 1869.

I have not yet found his parents family in the 1870 Census but the 1870 Directory lists Henry Sandherr, carpenter, residing at 915 Jefferson. The father is listed as follows in the Directories:
1871 - Henry Sandhew, carpenter with Lesly Garnett & Co, no res.
1872 - Henry Sanher, wagon maker, res. 1220 Cass Av
    1873 - Henry Sandhern, cabinet maker at 603? N. 3rh, res. 1220 Cass Av
    1874 - Henry Sandherr, carpenter, res. 2201 N. 9th
1875 - Henry Sandherr, carpenter, res. on Jefferson nw corner of 9th
    1876 - Henry Sandherr, cabinet maker, res. 2201 N. 9th
    1877 - Henry Sandherr, cabinet maker, res. 2203 N. 9th
1878 - Henry Sandherr, cabinet maker, res. 905 Exchange
    1879 - Henry Sandherr, carpenter, res. 2215 N. 9th

He and his family appears in the 1880 Fed. Census for St. Louis, Missouri, first enumeration (roll T9_719, supv. dist. 71, enum. dist. 51, stamped page 247C, hand-written page 35, image 0494, lines 15-18, dwelling #210, Family #351, dated 08 June). His father, Henry, is 51 years old and was born in Mecklenburg, Germany ca. 1829. His wife Mary is a 50 year old also born in Mecklenburg ca. 1830. Henry is a carpenter and Mary is keeping house. Their children are Frederick, 15 years old, and Sophie, 13; both born in Missouri of parents born in Mecklenburg. Frederick is working at a [wood] planning mill; Sophia is at school. The family is living at 2215 N. 9th Street in St. Louis.

I have not yet found the second enumeration of the 1880 Census for the family of Fred Sandherr's parents.

His father is listed in the 1880 St. Louis Directory. The 1881 St. Louis Directory lists an F. Sandherr, planer, living at 1818 Arsenal. The 1885 Dir. has Frederick H. Sandherr, machinist, living at 2215 N. 9th St. The 1886 Dir. shows his father, Henry Sandherr, cabmkr (cabinet maker), living at 2215 N. 9th St. There is a separate listing for Frederick Sandherr, machinist, at the same address and a Sophie Sandherr, bags, at the same address. Sophie is a sister to Frederick. The 1887 Directory lists Frederick as a machinist boarding at 2215 N. 9th with his father, Henry, a cab. mkr., and probably his mother.

The 1890 St. Louis City Directory lists Fred as a machinist living at 1423 Dodier with a Henry Sandherr who is a cabinetmaker. I am guessing that Henry was his father. The 1891 Directory has the same listing.

A Maria Sandherr was buried in Friedens Cemetery on 13 Dec. 1891 in Frieden's Cemetery. Was Maria the mother of Fred?.

The 1892 St. Louis City Directory shows Fred as a machinist living at 2525 Rauschenbach Ave. The 1893-95 Directories show him as a machinist living at 2618 St. Louis Ave. The 1896 Directory shows a Frederick Sanders (sic!), machinist, living at 2106 Destrehan. The 1897-99 Directories list Frederick H. Sandherr, machinist, living at 4201a Warne Ave. (not Warner and not Warren).

    - - - - - from his marriage (Nov. 1899) to the death of his daughter (Mar. 1918) - - - - -

Fred and Sibylla Thake were married (license #83339) by the Rev. Krey [Martin Krey] in the city of St. Louis on 15 Nov. 1899. The Rev. Krey wa pastor at the First German Congregational Church which was on Garfield Ave. at the southwest corner with Spring Ave. Earlier at this church (in 1896) there was the marriage of Christopher Vossler (Sibylla's uncle) and Josephine Oberfoell (-3G). At the time of his marriage Fred Sandherr was 33 years old and was living at 4201a Warne (not Warner) in St. Louis. Sibylla Thake was 26 years old, living at 2511 Coleman St. in St. Louis. (Warne is the street at the end of the block on Lexington where Fred's brother-in-law, Erven Thake lived at a later time.)

Click on this thumbnail to enlargen the (wedding?) picture of Fred and Sibylla, 15 Nov. 1899:

He appears in the 1900 Fed. Census for Missouri (vol. 96, e. district 262(?), sheet 13, line 75, dated 12 June 1900) living at 2210a Warren in St. Louis, MO. He is 34, born in Dec. 1865 in Missouri. Sibilla is 26, born Oct. 1873 in Missouri. There are no children as yet. The parents of Fred and Sibilla were all born in Germany. Fred is a machinist. Both read, write, and speak English.

His daughter Ethel J. M. Sandherr (-1G) was born on 4 Sep. 1900 according to the St. Louis City Register of Births (entry #8119). The family was living at 2210 Warren at this time. Son Erven Fredrick was born on 18 Sept. 1902 in St. Louis.

In the Fall of 1902 her son Erven was christened. This picture shows Sibylla holding Erven. Also we see Emilie Miller (-4G), the paternal grandmother of Sibylla. This picture was taken on the front porch and steps of a home. It could be the Sandherr home at 2210a Warren or 3814a Greer in St. Louis.

Her second son, H. S. Sandherr, was born on 22 Oct. 1904 but died only 3 days later on 25 Oct. 1904. He was buried on the same day in the Sandherr lot in Friedens Cemetery in north St.Louis County. This information appears in the St. Louis Public Library Obituary Index and also in records at the St. Louis County Library and is confirmed by the cemetery office. Although the death/burial records do not give the sex, a living relative recalls that someone told them this child was a boy. The Health Dept. certificate of death found on Ancestry.com states that it was a boy. Therefore the "H" initial might stand for "Henry" which was the name of the boy's paternal grandfather. He died because of a congenital malformation of the heart. At the time the family was living at 2301 Mallinkradt [sp?] St. in St. Louis. He was buried in Frieden's Cemetery.

Here is the Thake/Sandherr house at 3814 Greer Ave. in north St. Louis, only a couple streets from Lexington Ave. Date of the picture is unknown. Fred's in-laws lived here from ca. 1905 until ca. 1928. He lived here from ca. 1899 until ca. 1928. The house seems to have a third story or at least a large attic. The Mueller family also lived here for a while.

The 1910 Fed. Census for Missouri (Apr. 1910) shows Fred (43) and Sibylla (36) and two children, Ethel (9) and Erven (7). All were born in Missouri. Parents of Fred and Sibylla were all born in Germany. Fred is a machinist in a machine shop. Fred and Sibylla both know English and have been married 10 years. They are living at 3814a Greer Ave. in St. Louis. Downstairs we find the parents of his wife, along with their daughter Cecilia Thake and two boarders, George and Lawrence Vossler who may be orphaned cousins of Sibylla. These boys are machinist apprentices (perhaps Fred Sandherr was able to interest and place them in training).

The 1910 St. Louis Directory lists Frederick H. Sandherr, machinist, living at 3814 Greer Ave. The 1913 Dir. shows Frederick H. Sandherr (Am. Auto Repair Co., 3144 Locust), living at 3814 Greer Ave. The 1915 Directory lists Frederick in business with (or for) American Auto Repair Co. at 3144 Locust and living at 3814 Greer Ave. No other Sandherr is listed. The 1916 Dir. shows the same. The 1917 Dir. has Frederick H. Sandherr, machinist, living at 3814 Greer Ave. In this directory there is also a listing for a Marguerite Sandherr, clerk at 316 N. 18th, living at 4102 Westminster Place. I do not know her relation to Fred. The 1918 Dir. has Fredk. H. Sandherr, manager at American Auto Repair Co., living at 3814 Greer Ave. There is a separate listing for Margt. Sandherr, stenographer, h215, 4339 Olive.

His daughter Ethel died of appendicitis at age 17 and 1/2 on 16 Mar. 1918 in St. Louis.and was buried on 19 Mar. 1918 in Friedens Cemetery on N. Broadway.

    - - - - - from after the death of his daughter (Mar. 1918) to his own death (Jan. 1951) - - - - -

He appears in the 1920 Fed. Census for Missouri taken on 5 January (ward 21, e. district 419, sheet 4, line 53). He is living at 3814 Greer Ave. Downstairs lives his wife's parents Eugene and Johanna Thake (who own the house) and their daughter (his sister-in-law) Cecilia. Son Erven Sandherr is 17 at this time and was born in Missouri. Frederick and Sibilla were both born in Missouri but their parents were born in Germany. Fred is a machinist in an auto repair shop; Sibilla is the housekeeper. He is 53; Sibyla (Sibilla) is 46. Ethel is not listed probably because she had died before 1920. The age of Fred given here does not produce the birth year of 1865.

The 1922 St. Louis Directory lists Fredk. H. Sandherr, machinist, living at 3814 Greer Ave. The 1924 Directory has Fred. H. Sandherr, machinist, living at 3814 Greer. There is a separate listing for his son Ervin Sandherr, student, at the same address. The 1925 Dir. has Fred. H. Sandherr (American Auto Repair Co) living at 3814 Greer Ave. There is a separate listing for his son, Ervin Sandherr, student, at the same address. The 1926 Dir. has Fred. H. Sandherr (American Auro Repair Co) with a home at 3418 [sic!] Greer Av. There is a separate listing for Ervin Sandherr at the same address (no occupation). The 1927 Dir. has the same information for Fred. A separate listing for Ervin has him as a student living at the same address.

In ca. 1928 his wife's parents sold the house on Greer and Fred and Sibilla found a house at 3908 Lexington, only a few doors from the Erven Thake house at 3922 Lexington.

The 1930 Fed. Census for Missouri (T626_1243, enum. dist. 99, printed sheet 212, page 20A, lines 5 & 6, dated April 16) shows Frederick Sandherr 64 years old, born in Missouri of German parents. He is an automobile machinist; he is not a war veteran. He married at age 33. He is not in school at this time but can read, write, and speak English. His wife Sibylla is 57 years old, born in Missouri of German parents. She has no listed occupation. She married at age 26. She is not in school but can read, write, and speak English. They are renting the home at 3908 Lexington Ave. in St. Louis (ward 21, block 5189) for $40/month. This is the same street block where the family of Sibylla's brother, Erven Thake, lives (3922 Lexington). They own a radio set. No children are living with them.

Here are two separate pictures from the same place and date. On the left picture we see Fred Sandherr; on the right you see his wife Sibylla Thake. The pictures were taken at the home on Lexington Ave. in St. Louis in Oct. 1930. Click the thumbnail to enlarge.

His residence at the time was 1003 Curran Ave. in Kirkwood, the same as his son. He was a machinist for the Concret Transport Mixer Co.
