Her death certificate gives her birth as 7 Oct. 1907 but the grave monument gives 7 Oct. 1903. Her middle name might be Gertrude after her mother.

The 1920 Fed. Census for Missouri (T625_954, supv. dist. 183, enum. dist. 223, sheet 8B, dated 08 Jan.) shows Grace Emrick living in ward 2 of St. Louis (city) at 6112 Carlsbad Ave. (house 161, family 184 on the census). She is a cousin of the head of household who has become her guardian/caregiver. She is 16 years old and single, born in Illinois of parents born in Illinois. She is not in school but can read, write, and speak English. She is a wrapper for a manufacturing company, as a wage worker. The head of household in Benjamin Barnes, 47 (or 49?) years old, born in Illinois of parents also born in Illinois. He is working in a theater as a wage worker, but I cannot read the occupation. He is not in school but can read, write, and speak English. His wife is Gertrude Barnes, who is 36, born in Germany of parents also born in Germany. Her native tongue was German and she is not in school but she can read, write, and speak English. She has no occupation. She immigrated in 1900 and was naturalized in 1910(?). Also living in this household is another cousin of Benjamin Barnes (perhaps a brother to Grace) who is named Joseph Emrick. He is 14 years old, born in Illinois of parents also born there. He is in school and can read, write, and speak English. He has no occupation. Both children are single.

The 1925 St. Louis Dir. shows Severin Ricklin, carpenter, living at 4403a Virginia.

Miss Grace Emrick married Severin Moritz Ricklin (-1G) on 31 Oct. 1925 in St. Louis. He was living at 4403 Virginia Ave. and she was living at 2619 Ann. He was 20 and she was 22. They were married by a minister, H. Drees, who lived or had an office at 2613 Potomac St. in St. Louis. (application and license #290289)

Her son Robert S. Ricklin (0G) was born on 10 Aug. 1927 in Missouri (in St. Louis?).

Grace's husband, Severin (-1G), is in the back on our left. The baby is Robert Ricklin (0G), the son of Grace and Severin. Severin's mother, Hedwig (Hattie) (-2G), is in the back row on our right. Hedwig's father, Wilhelm Winge (-3G), is on our right. Wilhelm's wife, Martha (-3G), is the elderly woman with glasses in the front row, on our left. So the picture shows four generations. The picture was taken in the latter part of 1927 or early 1928. The 1930 Fed. Census for Missouri (T626_1235, supv. dist. 9, enum. dist. 481, page 8A, lines 48-50, dated 05 April) lists Grace Ricklin [née Emrick] 26 years old, living in St. Louis (city), at 4400 Alaska (block 2727-2697 of ward 13). Grace was married at age 21 and she is 26 at the time of this census. She was born in Illinois as were her parents. She is not in school but can read, write, and speak English. She has no occupation. Her husband, Severin Ricklin, is 25; he was born in Missouri but his father was born in Switzerland and his mother in Germany. He was married at age 20. He is a carpenter for a contractor but is not presently working. He was not a war veteran. Their son, Robert, is 2; he is not in school but can speak English (not yet read or write). He was born in Missouri, his father in Missouri and his mother in Illinois. The own the house which is valued at $7,000 and they have a radio set.

At the time of Severin's S. S. application (4 Dec. 1936) he was living at 4400 Alaska in St. Louis. No business address or employer was given. Grace did not have her own S. S. number; she filed under her husband's number (#489-09-6572).

The 1936 St. Louis Dir. has Severin M. (Grace) Ricklin, carpenter, home at 4400 Alaska Ave.

The Edwardsville Intelligencer newspaper (in Madison County, IL) mentions Grace, her husband, and their son in the "Personals" column on page 3 of several issues, upon their visits with Mr. and Mrs. Harold Funke and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Funke of Edwardsville. Mrs. Fred Funke was an aunt of Grace; then perhaps Mr. Harold Funk was a first cousin. In the Fri. 10 Jul. 1936 issue the newspaper reports, "Mrs. Grace Ricklin and son Robert of St. Louis visited Monday [06 Jul.] with Mrs. Fred Funke". In the issue of Fri. 14 Aug. 1936 the newspaper reports, "Mr. and Mrs. Fred Funke spent last Sunday in St. Louis with Grace Ricklin. They attended the birthday party for Robert Ricklin." In the Fri. 28 Aug. 1936 issue the newspaper reports, "Mr. and Mrs. Sev. Ricklin and son Robert of St. Louis will spend Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Funke." In the Fri. 27 Nov. 1936 issue the newspaper reports, "Mr. and Mrs. Fred Funke spent Thanksgiving with Mr. and Mrs. Severin Ricklin and son Robert in St. Louis." In the Sat. 26 Dec. 1936 issue the newspaper reports, "Mr. and Mrs. Severin Ricklin and son Robert of St. Louis and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Funke of this city were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Funke [on] Christmas." In the Fri. 15 Dec. 1939 issue the newspaper reports, "Mrs. Grace Ricklin, of St. Louis, spent Thursday with her aunt, Mrs. Fred Funke, here."

The 1942 St. Louis Dir. lists S Ricklin, carpenter, home 4400 Alaska Ave.

Severin and Grace lived on Rock Hill Rd. in St. Louis County (Missouri) in the 1940's and 50's. The St. Louis County Directory of 1955 lists Severin Ricklin, with wife Grace, as a carpenter at Famous Barr in St. Louis, living at 7127 Rock Hill Rd. in Affton. The St. Louis County Directory of 1958 shows Severin M. Ricklin, with wife Grace G., as a carpenter at Famous in Northland and living at 7127 Rock Hill Rd. in Affton. The County Dir. of 1961 lists Severin M. Ricklin, with wife Grace G., a carpenter at Famous-Barr in the Northland Shopping Center (north St. Louis County), living at 7127 Rock Hill Rd. in Affton, MO.

Here is a picture of Grace with her husband and other relatives at a restaurant , perhaps celebrating the birthday of her mother-in-law, Hedwig Winge. Picture was taken before 1963. Click on the thumbnail to enlarge.

Her foster mother (Gertrude Glaser) died on 15 Jul. 1964 and was buried in Sunset Memorial Park, St. Louis, in the lot where Grace and her husband were also buried at a later time. (Her foster mother was born 6 Feb. 1883.)

The 1965 County Dir. lists Severin M. Ricklin, with wife Grace G., a carpenter for Famous-Barr in St. Louis, living at 7127 Rock Hill Rd. in Affton, MO. The 1966 County Dir. lists the same information as in 1965. The 1969 County Dir. shows Grace) Ricklin, carpenter at Famous-Barr in St. Louis, home at 7127 Rock Hill Rd. in Affton, MO. The St. Louis County Directory of 1970 lists Severin M. Ricklin, with wife Grace G., retired, living at 7127 Rock Hill Rd. in Affton, MO.

Grace died on 17 Oct. 1970 at the Alexian Brother's Hospital in St. Louis. She died of acute coronary thrombosis as a result of arteriosclerotic heart disease. Her residence at death was 7127 Rock Hill Rd. in Affton, MO. Funeral was handled by Kriegshauser, 4228 S. Kingshighway, St. Louis. She is buried in Sunset Memorial Park (sect. 19, lot 219, grave 5?) St. Louis, next to her husband and mother. Her husband died after she died.

The death certificate of Grace Ricklin, wife of Severin Ricklin, with the same death date, gives Ben Barnes as her father's name. The name Emrick does not appear on this death certificate. Her husband was the informant. Ben Barnes is her foster father and Gertrude Glaser is her foster mother. Grace's birth year is given as 7 Oct. 1907 and her age as 63, which is different than that on the grave monument (7 Oct. 1903) and the calculation from her age on the marriage application (22). A calculation from her age in the 1930 Census results in a ca 1904 birth year. I need to do more research.

Here is the Ricklin monument in Sunset Memorial Park, in St. Louis County. There are graves on both sides. Grace's is in the middle of this side. Her husband is on our left and her mother on our right. The full dates are visible. Click to enlarge.
