*my direct-line ancestors. The (-2G), etc., after the names indicates the number of generations before Erven Thoma.

A sister, Adelheid (Adeline)* was born before Hedwig on 23 Apr. 1876 in Urnitz, Silesia, Prussia.

Hedwig's birth record was recorded at the "Standesamt" of Wölfelsdorf. Silesia, Prussia (now Wilkanow, Poland) on the 27 Sep. 1877, which stated that she was born in Urnitz (a neighboring small town) on the 13th. Her mother's father, Franz Teichgräber (-4G), was the informant. No middle or surname name appears on the birth record. Her mother is named.

Her nickname for our family was "Big" Hattie. Hattie is a nickname for Harriet which is the English form of Hedwig, after a saint and queen. I think her middle name was Martha after her mother. Other relatives gave her the nickname "Pom-Pom", the meaning of which is unknown to me.

Shortly after her birth her parents got married, then perhaps moved to the nearby town of Wölfelsdorf, the father's home town. One more child (Martha) was born before they emigrated.

Hedwig and family (from Prussia) took the ship "Hermann" from Bremen, arriving in Baltimore on 2 Nov. 1880. St. Louis was their destination. The family included Wilh. (Wilhelm), age 28, Martha Winge (nee Teichgraeber)* (-3G), age 26, Adelheid Winge* (-2G), 4 year old girl, Hedwig Winge (-2G), 3 year old boy (sic!), and little Martha Winge (-2G), a 9 month old baby girl. Notice the mistake in the sex for Hedwig on the ship passenger list. The other children were born in America. There were at least 11 children but 3 died young. Wilhelm and his family arrived too late in the year to get into the 1880 Census.

Between November 2 and 12 the family traveled from Baltimore to St. Louis and settled in a home.

The 1880 Fed. Census for Missouri (T9_729, FHL 1254729, second enumeration, supv. dist. 71, enum. dist. 134, printed page 332A, hand-entered page 17, Ancestry.Com image 0138, dwelling 18, family 44, lines 20-23, dated 12 Nov.) shows Wilhelm Winge and his family of 3. Wilhelm is a 28-year old cabinetmaker. He and his parents were born in Prussia. His wife Martha is 25 years old and is keeping house. She and her parents were also born in Prussia. Daughter Adelheid is 4 and daughter Hedwig is 3. They and their parents were born in Prussia. Notice that little Martha is not listed. They were living at 2110 DeKalb in St. Louis. Therefore, either she has died between the 2nd and 12th of Nov. or the Census did not record children under the age of 1 year.

The other 8 children were born in America. There was a total of at least 11 children but at least 3 died young.

The 1881 St. Louis Directory lists William Winge, carpenter, living in the rear of 2110 DeKalb. The 1882 Directory lists her father twice: once as a carpenter living at 2110 DeKalb and once as a fitter living at 609 Rutger. The term "fitter" probably is like a joiner. He could be listed twice because the family moved to Rutger while the canvasers were still recording information for the Directory.

On 28 June 1882 her sister Margaretha Winge died of cholera infantum (diarrhea) in St. Louis. When Margaretha died she was 10 months old and was living at 609 Rutger. She was buried in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery. (However the cemetery has no record of her.)

Brother William Richard Winge (-2G) was born on 19 May 1883 in St. Louis, MO.

The 1883 Directory shows her father, a cabinet maker, living at 609 Rutger. The 1884 Directory shows him as a fitter living at 1222 S. 9th St. (he is the only Winge listed). The 1885 Directory lists her father as a carpenter living at 1220 S. 9th St. (he is the only Winge). The 1886 Directory lists him as a carpenter living at 1220 S. 9th St.

Her brother Robert died 18 Oct. 1886; at that time the family was living at 3811 Texas Ave. in St. Louis.

The 1887 Directory lists her father as a cabinet maker living at the rear of 3811 Texas Ave.

Sister Emma A. Winge (-2G) was born on 26 Sep. 1888 in St. Louis. Brother Aloys Joseph Winge (-2G) was born 26 Nov. 1890 at St. Louis, MO.

The 1890 Directory also lists Hedwig's father, a carpenter, living now at 3742 Oregon Ave. We can assume that the whole family, inc. Hedwig, is living at those locations. The 1891 Directory also has him as a cabinet maker, still living on Oregon.

Brother Johann Albert Winge (-2G) was born on 21 Nov. 1892 in St. Louis.

The 1892 Directory shows her father, cabinet maker, living on the north side of Neosho near 16th. The 1893 and 1894 Directories shows him as a carpenter living on the north side of Neosho, near 17th.

Brother Theodore Winge (-2G) was born on 14 May 1894 in St. Louis.

The 1895 Directory has him as a cabinet maker, at the same address. The 1896 Directory shows him as a cabinet maker, living at 4449 S. 17th. The 1897 and 1898 Directories show her father as a cabinet maker, living at 4460 S. 17th.

Here is a picture of the Winge house (either on Neosho or on 17th St). Grape vines are see on the right porch. On the left porch we see what appears to be William and his wife Martha (older people on the right). The two younger women on the left side of the porch may be their daughters Hedwig and Adeline. The two girls in front of the house may be the younger daughters Frances and Emma. I do not know the man with the cow. Dated ca 1994-97.

Severin and Hedwig were married on 25 May 1898 by a Roman Catholic priest, the Rev. P. Francis Albers, of 3140 Meramec St. in St. Louis.  The church was probably nearby, perhaps St. Anthony of Padua. At the time Severin was 31 years old, living at 4405 Virginia Ave. in St. Louis. Hedwig was 20 years old, living at 4460 S. 17th St. in St. Louis.

Here is the wedding picture of Erhard Severin Ricklin and Hedwig M. Winge. Hedwig's older sister, standing on our right, was the maid of honor and made the dresses. The man on our right is a friend, Joe Alaska, who served as best man. Date of picture: 25 May 1898. Picture may have been taken at the church, St. Anthony of Padua, or at a studio or home.
Here is a picture of St. Anthony of Padua R. C. Church on Meramec St. in St. Louis. Hedwig and E. Severin were married here or by one of the priests of this church. Click on the thumbnail to the right to see a large version of the picture. Click here to see the web page for the church (which also includes the enlarged picture). Although this picture was taken in the summer of 2002, I believe that the church in 1898 looked very much like it is today.

The St. Louis Directory of 1899 lists her husband, E. Severin Ricklin, a baker, living at 3300 Morgan.

The Social Security application of her son, Severin Moritz Ricklin (#489-09-6572) gives Hedwig Winge as his mother and Severin Ricklin as the father. The passenger list index, Germans to America, has the wrong sex. Hattie operated a bakery/deli at 4401 Virginia in St. Louis and lived upstairs. Several of the Winge and Ricklin family members lived at that address or nearby.

She is not listed with her parents on the 1900 Census. However, she is found in the 1900 Fed. Census (vol. 98, reel 897, enumeration dist. 315, sheet 6, line 36, family 108) with her husband living at 3300? Morgan in St. Louis. She is 22 years old, born in Sept. 1877 in Germany. She immigrated in 1880 and her parents were born in Germany. Her name is misspelled "Hedwick". Her husband, Erhard S. Ricklin, is 33 years old, born in Sept. 1866 in Switzerland. He is a baker who immigrated in 1890; his parents were also born in Switzerland. They have been married 2 years; there are no children yet. They are renting. Also living there is a Robert J. Heinzer, a boarder, 22 years old, born 1877 in Missouri. He is also a baker, probably working for Hedwig and her husband..

    Winge Family Complete ca 1905

Wilhelm is the bearded man, seated in the front on our right. His wife, Martha, is the older woman on our front left, seated. Their eight living children are included in this picture. The picture was taken ca 1905. Click on the thumbnail to enlargen.

Here is a picture of the Ricklin family, taken ca 1912 in St. Louis? The man standing on our left is unknown. to be added later

The 1910 Fed. Census Soundex for Missouri (104 0206 0328, T624_817, enum. dist. 206, sheet 15B, page 75B, dwelling 305, family 338, lines 53-57, dated 30 Apr.) has Sevron (sic!) Ricklin living at 4404 13th St. South in ward 13 of St. Louis.  He is 40 years old and is a baker. Hedwig is 32, born in Germany.  One child is 8, born in Missouri; a daughter Martha is 5, born in Missouri; and a son George, is also 5, born in Missouri.  The actual Census says Hedwig had four children but 3 are living, so one might have been stillborn or died before 1910. It says they have been married 10 years.  Her parents are from Germany. The inclusion of a son named George is confusing but one of her offspring told me that George was a Swiss baker who worked for them in their bakery and lived with them for a time. It is said that George made fancy confections and bake goods but these were not so popular with the local patrons who preferred the stollens and breads.

It is strange that son Severin Moritz Ricklin is not on the 1910 Census when his S. S. application claims Hedwig and Severin Ricklin as his parents. The 1918 St. Louis Dir. shows Severin Ricklin, baker at 4403 Virginia Ave., home at same location.

Here is a picture of the buildings at 4401 and 4403 Virginia Ave. (at Osceola) taken before 1919 I think. The Severin Bakery, downstairs on the left, is the one owned by Erhard Severin and Hedwig. The corner saloon was owned by Hedwig's sister, Emma, and her husband Fred Marty.
Here is a side (Osceola St.) view of the present building at 4401/3 Virginia Ave., St. Louis, MO. Click the thumbnail to enlarge.
Here is a recent picture of the same buildings at 4401 and 4403 Virginia Ave. (taken in early 2002). The living quarters for several of the Winge and Ricklin families were upstairs. The bakery was downstairs.

Her husband died at age 52 on (19 Jan. 1919). Hedwig never married again. At this time they were living at 4403 or 4403a Virginia Ave. in St. Louis The obituary shows that all four of their children were living. His ashes were buried in Sunset Memorial Park (see the picture below) in St. Louis.

The 1920 Census listing has not been found yet.

The 1925 St. Louis Dir. shows Hedwig Ricklin (widow of Severin) with a home at 4403a Virginia. The 1926 and 1927 Directories have the same information. No other Ricklin appears in the 1926 and 1927 Dir.

    Winge - Ricklin Families

Their daughter Hedwig (Hattie) is in the back row on our right and Hedwig's son Severin M. Ricklin is in the back on our left. The baby is Robert Ricklin, the son of Severin. Hedwig's father, Wilhelm, is on our right. His wife, Martha, is the elderly woman with glasses in the front row, on our left. So the picture shows four generations. The picture was taken ca 1925 but before 1928. Click on the thumbnail to enlarge.

Hedwig's father died 31 Mar. 1928 in St. Louis and his ashes were buried in Sunset Memorial Park (see the picture below) in St. louis.

The 1930 Fed. Census for Missouri (T626_1235, supv. dist. 9, enum. dist 481, sheet 8B, lines 54-56, house #820, family #224, dated April 7) shows Hedwig Ricklin (her married name) as head of household. She is 53 years old, born in Germany of parents also born in Germany. She is not in school but can read, write, and speak English. She immigrated in 1879 [actually in 1880] and has the naturalization status as "Na". As a young child from birth her native tongue was German. She was married at age 25, is widowed, and has no occupation. She owns the house at 4403 Virginia Ave. where she and her family live and it is valued at $15,000. Living with her is her son, Aloys, who is 19 years old, born in Missouri of a father born in Missouri and a mother born in Germany. He is single and is not in school, but can read, write, and speak English. He is an accountant at an A & P office (grocery store). He was not a war veteran. Also living there is Hedwig's mother, Martha Winge [maiden name: Teichgraber], who is 73 years old, born in Germany of parents born in Germany. She is also widowed and has no occupation. Martha immigrated in 1876 [actually in 1880 on the same ship as Hedwig] and has the naturalization status as "Na". German was her native tongue. There is no radio in the household.

No Ricklin is in the 1930 St. Louis County Dir. The 1936 St. Louis Dir. lists Hedwig Ricklin (widow of Severin), with a confectionary at 4401 Virginia Ave. and a home at 4403a Virginia Ave. The 1942 Dir. has Hedwig M. Ricklin (widow of Severin), with a deli at 4401 Virginia and a home at 4403a Virginia Ave.

For many years she operated a bakery-deli on Virginia near the high school. I remember as a child visiting the store many times.

Her mother died on 2 Apr. 1944 in St. Louis and was buried in Sunset Memorial Park (see the picture below) in St. Louis.

The 1946 St. Louis Dir. has the same information as in 1936 but includes her middle initial. No Ricklin is in the 1949 St. Louis County Dir.

Her S. S. # was 499-36-8426, issued in Missouri on 5 Oct. 1951.  Her residence at the time of application was 4403a Virginia Ave. zip code 63111 in St. Louis. At this time she was 74 years old; her birth is given as Sept. 16, 1877. She was born in Germany. Her mother is given as Martha Teithgreber (sic!) and her father as Wm. Winge.  She was working at the YWCA, Carondolet branch at 4501 S. Kingshighway in St. Louis.

The 1956 St. Louis Dir. shows Hedwig M. Ricklin (widow of Severin) with a home at 4403a Virginia Ave. No other Ricklin is in that issue.

Here is a picture of Hedwig and several of her siblings. Hedwig (Hattie) is the woman on our left side. Click on thumbnail to enlarge.
Here is a picture of Hedwig (Hattie) on our right. Her sister Adeline is on our left. Click on the thumbnail to enlargen.
Here is a picture of the four Winge sisters. Hedwig is in the front row on our left. Click on the thumbnail to enlargen.
In this lawn party picture, Al Winge and his wife are the two people seated in the chairs. Hedwig is the woman standing on our far left. The picture was taken on 25 Aug. 1965 but I do not know the location. The other people are most of his siblings.

She was buried at Sunset Burial Park (Sunset Memorial Park) next to her husband's ashes and her parents' graves. An obituary appeared in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. At the time of her death she was a sister, sister-in-law, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, aunt, cousin, great-grandmother, and great aunt to many people.
