The * marks direct-line ancestors of Erven Thoma. The (-2G), etc., after the names indicates the number of generations before Erven Thoma.

He was known as John. He was named after his paternal grandfather. His middle name was Albert, but after whom?.

    His siblings include:  Adelheid (Adeline)* (b. 23 Apr. 1876), Hedwig (Hattie) (b. 13 Sep. 1877), Martha (b. in Jan/Feb 1880), Margaretha (b. 2 Sep, 1881), William (b. 19 May 1883), Robert (b. 30 May 1885), Frances (b. 23 Oct. 1886), Emma (b. 26 Sep. 1888), Aloys (b. 26 Nov. 1890), and Theodore (Ted) (b. 14 May 1894). Sister Martha died between 02 Nov. and 12 Nov. 1880. Sister Margaretha died on 28 June 1882 and brother Robert died on 18 Oct. 1886.

His birth, 21 Nov. 1892, is given in the St. Louis Birth Register, vol. 76-B, page 10933. At the time of his birth the family was living on the north side of Neosho near 17th St. On the index card he is named "Johnnie".

Here is a picture of the Winge house (either on Neosho or on 17th St). Grape vines are seen on the right porch. On the left porch we see what appears to be John's parents, William and his wife Martha (older people on the right). The two younger women on the left side of the porch may be John's sisters, Hedwig and Adeline. The two girls in front of the house may be his other sisters Frances and Emma. I do not know the man with the cow. Dated ca 1994-97.

The St. Louis City Directory of 1892 lists his father, cabinet maker, living on the north side of Neosho, near 16th (but I think it should be 17th). The Directories of 1893 and 1894 list his father, carpenter, living on the north side of Neosho, near 17th. The Directory of 1895 lists the father, cabinet maker, living on the north side of Neosho, near 17th. The Directory of 1896 lists the father, cabinet maker, living at 4449 S. 17th. The Directories of 1987-1899 lists the father, cabinet maker, living at 4460 S. 17th.

He is listed in the 1900 Missouri Census (district 179, sheet 6, line 48) for St. Louis. The father, Wilhelm, was born in Dec. 1851 in Germany and is 48 years old. His occupation is cabinet maker, he can read and write inc. English. He owns his house at 4460 South 17th St. in St. Louis. He has been in the U.S. for 20 years. With him is his wife Martha 42 years old, born in Sept. of 1854 in Germany, her parents also born in Germany. Also listed is their daughter Adelheid, born in Apr 1880 which disagrees with other sources. Adelheid (later called Adeline) is a dressmaker and her birthplace is Germany. A son Wilhelm (later called William) was born May 1883 in Missouri, is 17 years old, but was not at school. A daughter Francis (sic!, Frances) was born Oct. 1886 in Missouri, is 13 years old, and was at school. A daughter Emma was born Sept. 1888 in Missouri, is 11 years old, and was at school. A son Alois is 9, was born in Missouri in Nov. 1890, and was at school. A son Johann (later called John) was 7, was born in Nov. 1892, and was at school. A son Theodore was 6, born in Missouri in May 1894, but was not at school. Daughter Martha, who came over on the ship, died before 1900. Daughter Hedwig was married, living elsewhere.

When his sister Adeline got married (20 Dec. 1904), their father, Wilhelm (William), and his family were living at 4460 S. 17th St. in St. Louis.

His mother, Martha, is the older woman on our front left, seated. Their eight living children are included in this picture. The picture was taken ca 1905. Click on the thumbnail to enlargen.

In the 1910 Census for Missouri he is listed as John (St. Louis ward 13, enum. dist. 206, sheet 8B, lines 80-85, dwelling 161, family 198, dated 29 Apr.). He is 17 years old, born in Missouri, and is living with his parents and three siblings (Emma, Aloys and Theodore) at their home on 17th St. in St. Louis, MO. He is an apprentice in a construction trade. His father, William, is 58 and is a carpenter in the cabinet business. [His other living siblings are married, living elsewhere.]

Sometime between 1911 and 1915 Wilhelm, his wife, and their last child, Ted, (I believe) moved out to Bollinger County in Missouri where they had bought a small farm near Fredrickstown. William does not appear in the 1915 St. Louis Directory.

The 1916 St. Louis City Directory shows John A. Winge, electrician, residing at 4403a Virginia Ave.

His wife was a preacher's daughter from Hoosier Twsp., Clay Co., Illinois. They married in the same county on 31 Jul. 1916.

John registered with the WWI draft board 13 in precinct 5 of ward 13 of St. Louis (roll 1683752, card 120). On the card several interesting pieces of information are revealed. He is 27 years old and his wife is 23. He is an electrician in the contracting industry. He was born in Missouri, his parents in Germany; she was born in Illinois, her father in Illinois, mother in Kentucky. There are no children yet.

The Jackson, MS city directories for the years 1922-24 and 1926 are either not available or not published. The 1925 Jackson Dir. does not list any Winge families. He does not appear in the 1926 or 1927 St. Louis Directories. The 1927/28 Jackson Dir. has John Wingo [sic!] with wife Florence and 2 children, foreman at Koeneman Elec. Co., living at or in West End Acres. The 1929-30 Jackson Dir. has John A. Winge with wife Florence and 2 children, vice-president of Koeneman Elec. Co. Inc., home at 723 S. James. The 1930 Jackson Dir. has John A. Winge with wife L. Florence and 2 children, vice-pres. of Koeneman Electric, home at 374 S. Arbor Vista.

The 1930 Census for Mississippi (T626_1147, supv. dist. 8, enum. dist. 25-18, sheet 15B, lines 56-59, dwelling 299, family 386, dated 10 April) shows John, his wife Lula F., and two daughters living at 374 Arbor Vista in ward 11 of Jackson (city) of Hinds County (house visited 299, family 386). John A. Winge, is 37 years old, born in Missouri of German parents. He was married at age 23. He is not in school but reads, writes, and speaks English. He is working as an electrician for an electric company. He was not a war veteran. His wife, Lula is 33 years old, born in Illinois of a father born in Illinois and a mother born in Kentucky. She was married at age 20. She is not in school but reads, writes, and speaks English. She has no occupation. They own the house which is valued at $3,500. Their one daughter is 8, born in Missouri and the other, Irma, is 7, born in Mississippi; they are both in school.

His third daughter, Shirley Winge (-1G), was born on 17 June 1931 in Jackson?, Miss.

The Jackson, MS city directories for 1931 and 1933-35 are either not available or not published. The 1932 Jackson Dir. lists John A. Winge, with wife L. Florence and 3 children, vice-pres. at Koeneman Elec. Co., home at 347 S. Arbor Vista.

He was mentioned in the obituary of his mother, ca 3 Apr. 1944 in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

A picture of Johann and his wife Florence (click to enlarge). I do not know the date of this picture, but it was certainly before April of 1947.

There is some evidence that he was still alive in January of 1946. I have a postcard dated 10 Jan. 1946 from a Martha (Martha Ricklin?) to Adeline Winge Thoma stating that she visited Mississippi but did not get to see Johnny. Since there is no other John in the family, it must be John Winge.

According to a relative, he died while a patient at the Mississippi State Hospital in Whitfield, Miss which is about 13 miles from Jackson. He was buried in the Cedarlawn Cemetery in Jackson, Miss.

Here is a picture of John's grave stone. (click to enlarge) Note the disprepancy in birth dates.
