St. Edward the King was founded by Rev. Edward J. Wynne in May, 1893. Edward J. (Rev.) Wynne was born on 6 Mar 1849 in Ireland. Edward joined religion in St. Edward's Catholic church. The church was named after Edward, the King of England from 1042 to 1066. The Roman Catholic Church regards Edward the Confessor as the patron saint of kings, difficult marriages, and separated spouses. There are two kinds of saints in the Catholic Church: martyrs and confessors, the latter being those who died of natural causes. After the reign of Henry II Edward was considered the patron saint of England until 1348 when he was replaced in this role by St. George. He remained the patron saint of the Royal Family.
At first the church basement was erected on the church site at 2701 Clara Avenue. Until the church was completed later, the basement was used for both church and school purposes. At the time of the parish's founding, it numbered 250 families. St. Edward's parochial school has been demolished and its site is now a playground. It was initially primarily an Irish parish.
