Her father and mother, and perhaps also Margaretha and her brothers, were probably born in Laudenbach am Main, Bavaria. Margaretha was born on 25 Jun. 1835. |
 |
They immigrated on 16 Jan. 1854 to New Orleans, traveling on the ship Otomoco from St. Thomas (Germans to America, vol. 6). I do not know how or when they traveled from Bavaria to St. Thomas. |

Her marriage is listed twice in the St. Louis records, both to the same man: Charles Jenne. The first time is 30 Oct. 1858 (vol. 14, p. 185) and could be a civil marriage ceremony. The other is in 1869 (see below).

Son Carolo (Carl?) Jenne (-2G) born 22 Oct. 1859. He was baptized on 12 Feb. 1860 in St. Mary of Victories in St. Louis. Sponsors are Stephen Uhrig and Barbara Loderer. This child died before 31 July 1860.
The 1860 Fed. Census for Missouri (M653_651, page 0, page 305, lines 20-21, dated 31 Jul.) shows Carl Jenne and his wife living in ward 5 of St. Louis. Carl is a 27 year old wholesale liquor dealer from Bavaria. His wife, Margarita, is a 24 year old from Prussia. Their personal property is valued at $4,000. There are no children yet but one may have been born and died as an infant before 1860.
There was a Lieutenant Charles Jenne serving in Company H, 1st Battalion W.S.R.C. in the 4th Missouri Cavalry of the Union Army, Civil War.
Since Margaret's husband Charles is the only Jenne in most of the St. Louis Directories for the 1964-1971 period, he is probably related to Maria M. Jenne (-3G), the wife of Joseph Scharfenberger.
The St. Louis City Directory of 1864
lists Charles Jenne with a saloon and residence on Market St. between 19th
and 20th. The Directory of 1865 lists
Charles, saloonkeeper, with a residence (and saloon?) at 508 Market St.
In the 1866 Directory Charles is listed
with a saloon and residence at 508 Market (he is the only Jenne). In the
1867 Directory there is a Charles Jenne, barkeeper, Joseph Uhrig, bds. 1808 Market (He is the only Jenne listed in that year).
Her son Charles (second one by that name) was born on 25 June 1867 and was baptized at St. Nicholas R. C. Church in St. Louis on 18 Jul. 1867.
- - - - - from 1868 until 1872 - - - - -
In the 1868
Directory, Charles is listed with a saloon and residence at 1808 Market.
At that same address is a Jacob Jenne, tanner, who may be a brother.
The St. Louis, MO Marriage Register, 1804-1876, lists two marriages for Charles Jenne, both to Margaret Uhrig. One is on 30 Oct. 1858 (vol. 14, p. 185) and the other on 30 Oct. 1869 (vol. 14, p. 185). It seems like one of them is a mistake and these are one and the same records. Regardless of which date is correct, they show that Maria M. Jenne cannot be the daughter of this Charles Jenne, but perhaps she is a sister. However they could have married twice, perhaps the second time was officiated by a priest.
In the St. Louis City Directory of 1869
Charles is listed as wine importer at 1808 Market. In the 1870
Directory there is a Charles Jenne, wine dealer and importer, with the
business Charles Jenne & Co. at 420 Market St. (SE cprner of 5th).
Charles Jenne does not appear in the 1870 Census Index for St. Louis. However, there is a Charles Genne family in the 1870 Census for St. Louis (roll M593_816, ward 6, stamped page 347, hand-written page 88, dwelling 548, family 548, dated 22 June). This seems to be the correct one. He a 38 year old wine merchant, born in Baden of foreign parents. His wife, Margaret, 35, born in Bavaria of foreign parents, is keeping house. They own the house which is valued at $20,000 and have $3,000 in other assets. They can read and write. They have three children: Joseph, 10 and born in Missouri, who is at school; August, 6 and born in Missouri, who is at school; and Charles, 3 and born in Missouri, who is at home. Also living in the house are Margaret's parents.
In the 1870 St. Louis City Directory
there is a Jacob Gruen who is a bartender with C. Jenne & Co. and living at 2628 Tayon Av. The owner of this wine dealer/importer business was Charles Jenne who was head of household at 2628 Tayon Av. Note the connection between Gruen and Jenne, and probably Scharfenberger.
The St. Louis City Directory of 1871
has Charles Jenne, wine dealer and importer, with the business Charles
Jenne & Co. at 420 Market (SE corner of 5th). The name J. Green is
added to the business listing later in the same Directory. I assume this
is Jacob M. Gruen who is correctly spelled in
the 1870 Directory.
The St. Louis City Death Register, 1850-1908, lists the death of Margaretha's father, Joseph Uhrig (-4G), on 03 Feb. 1872. He was living at 20th and Walnut (vol. 5, p. 253). Also found in Missouri Archives C10371, SLGS rolls 312, and St. Louis County Library RDSL 13.
The 1872 St. Louis Directory lists the Charles Jenne & Co., wine dealer, at 420 Market. Charles Jenne and Jacob M. Gruen are partners. Charles is living at 2628 Market. He is the only Jenne in the year's directory.
- - - - - from the death of her husband (Dec. 1872) to her own death (Feb. 1906) - - - - -
However, Charles Jenne died that year on 15 Dec. He was living at 2628 Market. This is recorded in the St. Louis City Death Records, 1850-1908, vol. 5, page 253 (County Lib. RDSL 13, MO Archives C10371, SLGS rolls 312). He was buried in the Uhrig/Jenne lot in Bellefontaine Cemetery.
The 1873 Directory also lists the Charles Jenne & Co., wine dealer, located at 420 Market and gives his address as 2628 Market. However, Charles has in fact died at the end of the previous year; no doubt his widow and four children are still living there. His partner, Jacob Gruen, may have taken over the business. The 1874 Directory does not list the business or Charles name.
Margaretha's mother, Rosina Uhrig (-4G), died on 21 Apr. 1875 in St. Louis. Her address at the time was 2628 Market St. This is recorded in the St. Louis City Death Records, 1850-1908, vol. 6B, page 183 (SLGS rolls 313, MO Archives C10373, County Lib. RDSL 15).
The first enumeration of the 1880 Census for Missouri (T9_723, FHL 1254723, supv. dist. 1, enum. dist. 132, stamped p. 33C, hand-entered p. 15, lines 1-6, dwelling 109, family 131, dated 03 June) lists Margaret and her family living at 2628 Laclede Ave. Margaret is a 45 year old widow who is the head of household from Bavaria. Her son Joseph is a 19 year old apprentice sadler. Her son August is 15; son Johnie [Charles] is 13 and Barbara is 10. The information on the children indicated that their father [deceased] was born in Baden. Margaret's aunt, Margaret Uhrig, is living with them at age 70.
There is a Margaret Jenne, 45 years old from Bavaria, in the 1880 Census for St. Louis, 2nd enumeration. She and her family are neighbors to Jacob Gruen. My guess is that she is the widow of Charles and the same person as our Margaret of this web page. Our Jacob M. Gruen is living at 2710 Laclede which houses several families. Margaret Jenne is widowed and has 4 children (see the list below), 10-19 years old. Also living with her is an aunt, Margaret Uhrig who is 70 years old from Bavaria. The name Uhrig appears in the 1867 Directory listing for Charles Jenne. Uhrig is the maiden name of Charles Jenne's wife, so this Margaret Uhrig is perhaps an aunt of Margaret Jenne (née Uhrig).
The 1890 St. Louis City Directory has a listing for a Charles Jenne (Jr), plumber, living at 2634 Laclede. In the same directory is Margaret Jenne, widow of Charles, also living at 2634 Laclede Ave.
The 1900 Census for Missouri (T623_895, page 4B, enum. dist 220, dwelling 60, family 94, dated 05 June) lists Margaret Jenne, a 64 year old widow, who was born in June of 1835. She and her parents were born in Germany. No occupation is listed for her. She had six children but only three are living at this time [Joseph, Charles and Barbara]. Joseph and Barbara are living with her; they are not married. [Charles is married, living elsewhere.] Also living there is Margaret's niece Margaret Uhrig. This niece was born in 1874 and is 26 years old. They are living at 2634 Laclede in ward 14.

She died on 26 Feb. 1906 in St. Louis. An obituary appeared in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on 26 Feb.; a burial notice on 28 Feb. The death record is available in the MO Archives (roll C647, #1223, dated 27 Feb. 1906. |
| She was born in Germany and her occupation was "H. Lady". Her place of death was her home at 2634 Laclede Ave. in St. Louis. She died at age 71 from senile debility according to the doctor, Bernicelli. M. Haughey was the undertaker. She was buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery (block 72, lot 2082, grave 8) in St. Louis County. |
The MO Archives record (#1223) gives her first name as Margaretta and her date of death as "00/26/1906" which should read "02/26/1906." She was born in Germany. Place of death was 2634 Laclede Ave. in St. Louis at the age of 71 from senile debility. Occupation was "H. Lady." Undertaker was M. Haughey and burial was in Bellefontaine Cemetery. The physician was L. E. Bernicelli.

Brother Theodore died ca. 29 Sept. 1911.
THE SIX CHILDREN OF CHARLES JENNE (-3G) AND MARGARET UHRIG (-3G):
Two unnamed children were either stillborn or died as infants. It is not know if they were buried in a cemetery. Dates are not know. We only know of these children from the 1900 Census.
Joseph (-2G), the first son of Charles (-3G), was a tin worker. He is listed in the St. Louis City Directories for 1887 and 1890, living at 2634 Laclede Ave. He is listed in Gould's 1913 Blue Book for St. Louis, living at 4480 Laclede Ave. He did not marry or have children. He died in 1924 and was buried on 25 Apr. 1924 in the Uhrig/Jenne lot in Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis County.
August (-2G), the second son of Charles (-3G), was a clerk. He also worked in feed. He was listed in the St. Louis City Directories for 1887 and 1890, living at 2634 Laclede Ave. He died on 18 May 1898 at which time he was living at 2634 Laclede. He did not marry or have children. He died in 1898 and is buried on 20 May 1898 in the Uhraig/Jenne lot in Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis County.
Charles (-2G), the third son of Charles (-3G), was a plumber. He is listed in the St. Louis City Directories for 1887 and 1890. In both directories he is living at 2634 Laclede Ave. He married Katharine Maenner and had four children: Charles, Edward, Margaret, and Barbara Marie. Edward died at 2 weeks of age. Charles the plumber also lived at 3738 Evans Ave. In the same 1890 directory is Margaretha Jenne, widow of Charles of this web page (and mother of Charles the plumber), who is also living at 2634 Laclede Ave. Katharine Maenner died on 08 Mar. 1903 at the age of 43 years, 6 months, 28 days. Charles died on 04 Jan. 1907 at the age of 49 years, 11 months, 29 days and is buried in Valhalla Cemetery in St. Louis.
Barbara Carolina (-2G), the only daughter of Charles (-3G), died in 1955, at ca 85 years of age. She did not marry or have children. Since her mother and brothers were living at 2634 Laclede in 1887 and 1890, and she was not married, she was probably living at that address too. She is listed in the 1910 Census, living with her brother Joseph and first cousin Margaret Uhrig. She is listed in Gould's 1013 Blue Book for St. Louis, living with her brother Joseph at 4480 Laclede. On the 1920 and 1930 Census she was living on Pershing Ave. in St. Louis with a cousin, Margaret (Maggie) Uhrig. Barbara was a cousin (first) to our grandmother, Josephine, as proven by an autograph book owned by Josephine which is in the possession of our family. She did not have a spouse or children. Barbara died in 1955 and is buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery in the Uhrig/Jenne lot
Much of the information on this page was supplied by a descendant of Charles Jenne and Margaret Uhrig
