*my direct-line ancestors. The (-2G), etc., after the names indicates the number of generations before Erven Thoma.

I do not know the names of her parents, nor their birth dates/place, marriage date/place, or death date/place. Also, I do not know about any siblings she may have had.

In the St. Louis Birth Register, the listing for her son William (#1784) gives her name as Mathias [with the letter "a"].

She immigrated before 7 Nov. 1850 because that is when she got married in St. Louis.

The 1870 Census for Missouri (roll M593_816, printed page 328B, hand-entered page 50, dwelling #328, family #318, lines 27-35, dated 16 June) shows Mary, her husband and their family living in St. Louis, ward 6, Sub-division #12. Mary is 49 years old and is keeping house. She was born in France and her parents were foreign-born. Her husband Philip Corneli is 51 years old and is a laborer. He was born in Hessen-Darmstadt and his parents were also foreign-born. Their house has a value of $5,000 and their personal property has a value of $500. Their seven children are listed; all were born in Missouri; their parents were of foreign-born. Daughter Elizabeth is 19 years old and is at home. Son Philip B. is 15 and is at school. Son Adolph is 9 and is at school. Daughter Mary is 7 and is at school. Daughter Louisa is 5 and is at home. Daughter Mina is 3 and is at home. Son Otto is 4 months and is at home. Jacob Corneli's family is living next door.

At the time of the birth of her son William on 25 Dec. 1872 (Birth Register entry #1784), the family was living at 3616 Olive St.

In the 1880 Fed. Census for Missouri Marie and her family are counted twice because of census fraud. Thery are at two different addresses in the two enumerations: 2414 Olive St. (vol. 35, en. dist. 133, sheet 15, line 24) to 2614 Olive St. (vol. 41, en. dist. 344, sheet 1 line 40), In the second listing we see her husband, Philip, 61 years old, born in Darmstadt. Marie (Mary) is 49 born in Alsace (France). Children listed are Lizzie (29), Philip B. (26), Adolph (20), Theresia (18), Minnie (13), Otto (10), and William (called Willie) is 8. William and all his siblings were born in Missouri.

Her husband died on 01 (or 02) Feb. 1883 in St. Louis, MO. The St. Louis City Death Records, 1850-1908, p. 286, lists Philip Corneli, died 01 Feb. 1883. He was living at 2614 Olive St., buried in St. Peter's Cemetery. Volume, SLGS roll, and MO Archives references are not given in the Ancestry.com db. There is an obituary in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on page 5 of the paper of 02 Feb.

In the 1885 St. Louis Directory, she is listed as Mary Corneli, wid. of Philip, living at 2614 Olive. St. The 1886 Directory has the same listing information for Marie. Included in the latter are listings for the daughter Minnie as a saleslady at W. Ellison, living at 2614 Olive. Also in this directory we find Adolph Corneli as a clk at Plant Seed Co., living at 2614 Olive St.

The 1892-1895 St. Louis Directories list Philip F. Corneli, barber, living at 1317 Washington. The 1896 Directory lists him at 1315 Washington. I do not know who this Philip F. Corneli; it is not Marie's husband because he died in 1883. Perhaps it is her son.

The 1898 Directory lists Marie Corneli as a widow of Philip, living at 3027 Easton Ave. The 1899 Directory lists Mary Corneli, widow of Philip, living at 3027 Easton Ave.

Her husband died (1 Feb. 1883) before the 1900 Census because Marie is listed in that Census (vol. 98, e.d. 308, sheet 2, line 10) as a widow living at 3017 Easton with some of the same children that appeared in the 1880 Census. Marie is 68 years old, born in Sep. 1831 in France, but with NR citizenship. Also living there are a daughter, Elizabeth. 47 years old, born in June 1852 in Missouri; a daughter Minnie, 32 years old, born in June 1867 in Missouri; son William, 27 years old, born in Dec. 1872 in Missouri, a daughter-in-law, Catherine, 27 years old, born in Jul. 1872 in Missouri; and a boarder, Mrs Lena Hammerstein, 47 years old, born in Feb. 1853 in Illinois.

Marie died on 24 May 1909 in St. Louis. The St. Louis Pub. Lib. Obit Index for 1909 lists Marie M. Corneli (nee Mathis) with two notices in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: an obit on 27 May and a burial notice on 28 May.

    -------------------------------------

Benjamin P. (sometimes called Philip B.) Corneli was their second child that lived to adulthood. He was born on 03 Apr. 1855 in St. Louis. He became president of the family-owned Schyler-Corneli Seed Co. He died on 07 Jan. 1926 in St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond Heights, MO and was buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis County.

Son Adolph appears in the 1899 Census (sic! St. Louis Directory?) as secretary of the Schisler-Corneli Seed Co. at 813 N. 4th, living at 3840a Page Blvd.

The 1900 Census does have an Adolph Corneli with his wife living at 3840 Page in St. Louis (vol. 98, e.d. 325? or 225?, sheet 5, line 31). The 1899 St. Louis Directory lists Adolph working for the Schisler-Corneli Seed Co. There is also a Jacob Corneli in the 1900 Census (vol. 99, e.d. 332, sheet 3). There is also a Charles Corneli in the 1900 Census; perhaps a nephew of Philip. There is a George Corneli in the 1898 St. Louis Directory and a Benjamin (Philip B.?) Corneli listed in the 1899 Directory who is working for the Schisler-Corneli Seed Co. Jacob Corneli is also found in the 1880 Census living at 2618 Olive (vol. 35, e.d. 133, sheet 15, line 46).
