Martha Winge (-2G)
one of our paternal great aunts
*marks my direct-line ancestors. The (-2G), etc., after the names indicates the number of generations before Erven Thoma Born in Jan. or Feb. 1880, most likely in Woelfelsdorf, Silesia, Prussia where her father was living. Germans to America, the volume for late 1880, lists Wil. Winge, a 28 year old joiner with his wife, from Prussia, sailing on the "Hermann" from Bremen and arriving in Baltimore on 2 Nov. 1880. According to the ship passenger list St. Louis was their destination. The family included Wilh. (Wilhelm?) Winge* (-3G), age 28, Martha Winge (nee Teichgraeber)* (-3G), age 26, Adelheid Winge* (-2G), 4 year old girl, Hedwig Winge (-2G), 3 year old boy (sic!), and little Martha Winge (-2G), a 9 month old baby girl. Since Adelheid is the German for Adeline and the year of birth and destination matches, I (Erven Thoma) believe Adelheid was the same person as Adeline. The family traveled from Baltimore to St. Louis in 10 days or less and settled into their home by the 12th of November. (See the Census report in the following paragraph.) The 1880 Fed. Census for Missouri (T9_729, FHL 1254729, supv. dist. 71, enum. dist. 134, printed page 332A, hand-entered page 17, Ancestry.Com image 0138, dwelling 18, family 44, lines 20-23, dated 12 Nov.) shows the Winge family living at 2110 De Kalb in St. Louis, inc. the father, mother, Adelheid and Hedwig. But little Martha is not listed. Therefore, either she had died between the 2nd and the 12th of Nov., or else the 1880 Census did not list children of her young age (less than 1 year). The 1881 St. Louis Directory lists her father, William Winge, carpenter, living in the rear of 2110 De Kalb. The 1882 Directory has two listings for William Winge. One is a carpenter living at 2110 De Kalb and the other is a fitter living at 609 Rutger. It is possible that "fitter" means "joiner" and that the two are actually one and the same person who just got recorded twice by the Directory because he moved. Since she appears on the passenger list of 2 Nov. but not on the 1880 Census sheet of 12 Nov., I assume that she died between those dates. Perhaps she died en route from Baltimore to St. Louis or in St. Louis itself. I need to check the St. Louis Death Register for November 1880. Her siblings consist of 10 others, including Adelheid (Adeline) E. Winge* (-2G), Emma Winge (-2G), Johann (John) A. Winge (-2G), Frances Winge (-2G), Theodore (Ted) Winge (-2G), Wilhelm (William/Bill) R. Winge (-2G), Aloys J. Winge (-2G), Hedwig (Hattie) M. Winge (-2G), Margaretha Winge (-2G) and Robert Winge (-2G). Adelheid and Hedwig were born before Martha; the others were born after Martha died.
