The (-1G), etc., after the names indicates the number of generations before Erven Thoma.

The 1880 Census for Illinois (T9_246, supv. dist. 7, enum. dist. 35, page 71A, hand-entered p. 33, dwelling 214, family 267, dated 12 June) shows Nellie living with her parents John and Margaret Murphy in East St. Louis. Her father was born in Ireland. Her mother, Margaret, was born in Missouri. Nellie is 17, born in Missouri. Laura is 15, born in Missouri. The other children were born in Illinois; they are a son (Jas?) 8 years old, Maggie 7, Sally 4, Belle 2 and Jannie 3 months (Feb.). Nellie and Laura are at home. Other children are probably at home also. They are living on St. Louis Avenue.

She married Robert Gutwald ca. 1886 and mothered at least three children, Frances L. Gutwald (-2G) (born in April 1890) and Nellie Margaret (-2G) on 28 Mar. 1894 in East St. Louis, IL and one other, unknown name and dates. This unnamed child died before the 1900 Census. Whether she and her husband had more than three children is unknown.

The 1900 Census for Illinois (T623_341, supv. dist. 15, enum. dist. 100, p. 13B line 100 and p. 14A lines 1-3, family 297, dated 08/09 June) shows Nellie M. Gutwald and her family living in ward 5 of East St. Louis, St. Clair County, IL. They are renting at 218 N. 3rd St. Her husband, Robert H. Gutwald, is a harnessmaker. He was born in June of 1863 and is 36 years old. He can read, write and speak English. He was born in Missouri; his parents in Austria. Nellie is 35 years old. She was born in 1864 in Missouri; her father in New York and her mother in Missouri. No occupation is given for Nellie but we can assume that it is housekeeper. They have been married 14 years and had three children, two of which are living. Daughter Frances L. is 10 and was born in April 1890 in Illinois. Daughter Nellie is 6 years old, born in Mar. 1894 in East St. Louis, IL. The girls are in school.

Her husband died some time after the 1900 Census, but I do not know where or when.

She died after the 1900 Census but I do not know when or where (but probably in East St. Louis, IL). Her name does not appear in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Obituary Index at the St. Louis Public Library during the years 1900 through 1910. Perhaps she died in Illinois.
