    Is his middle name Severin?

Here is a four-generation taken in the latter part of 1927 or the early part of 1928. Robert is the baby. His father, Severin, is in the back, his grandmother, Hedwig Winge, is also in the back, and his great-grandparents, Wilhelm Winge and Martha Teichgräber, are in the front.

The 1930 Fed. Census for Missouri (T626_1235, supv. dist. 9, enum. dist. 481, page 8A, lines 48-50, dated 05 April) lists Robert and his parents living in St. Louis (city), MO at 4400 Alaska (block 2727 of ward 13). His mother, Grace Ricklin [née Emrick], is 26 years old. Grace was married at age 21 and she is 26 at the time of this census. She was born in Illinois as were her parents. She is not in school but can read, write, and speak English. She has no occupation. Robert's father, Severin Ricklin, is 25; he was born in Missouri but his father was born in Switzerland and his mother in Germany. He was married at age 20. He is a carpenter for a contractor, but is not presently working. He was not a war veteran. Robert, is 2; he is not in school but can speak English (not yet read or write). He was born in Missouri, his father in Missouri and his mother in Illinois. They own the house which is valued at $7,000 and they have a radio set.

At the time of his father's S. S. application (4 Dec. 1936) Robert and his parents were living at 4400 Alaska in St. Louis. No business address or employer was given for his father. His mother did not apply for her own S. S. number.

The 1945 Cleveland High School yearbook "Beacon" has two pictures of Robert. One where he is one of the students in Mr Beer's Group (p. 108) and one individual picture (p. 102). The latter is accompanied by his motto "Hang sorrow. What care I for tomorrow?" Below is the latter picture.

Here is the Cleveland High School (St. Louis) picture of Robert Ricklin from the 1945 yearbook. Click to enlarge.

His two children were born after Jan. 1946.

    Robert's own S. S. number (492-20-0783) was issued in Missouri before 1951.

Robert served during World War II. He enlisted on 23 Jan. 1946 at Jefferson Barracks. No branch assignment was given at the time but the grade of private was awarded. The enlistment record gives his birthyear as 1927 in Missouri. He was single without dependants. He finished 4 years of high school. He was 84" high and weighed 465 lbs which has to be a mistake (perhaps 169 lbs is correct).

Married to Shirley E. Altzater (0G) after the military enlistment.
