WASHINGTON (the ship)

Information and Picture on the ship Washington
A George Washingbton ship was built in 1822 in New York or perhaps in Conneticut. From 1839 to 1849 the ship GEORGE WASHINGTON belonged to the Bremen firm of C. L. Brauer & Sohn, and from 1849 to 1855 to the Bremen firm of F. Möller Söhne. But this ship was in South Australia in Sept. of 1844 so it could not have arrived in New Orleans ca. 26 Oct. 1844.

A ship named Washington was built in Baltimore, MD in 1837. The displacement was 190 tons; the length was 91' 2". Rigging was topsail schooner but in 1838 it was changed to brig. It was commissioned in 1837. In 1840 she was transfered to the Navy's Coast Survey. So this ship is not the one which carried the Grupp family either.

I have found information on other ships named just Washington, but not the ship that carried the Grupp family.

When it arrived on ca. 26 Oct. 1844 in New Orleans from Bremen, it brought the following people:

Johann Wilhelm Grupp (-4G) Johanna Maria Baer (-4G)
Johann L.Grupp (-3G) George Adam Grupp (-3G)

Records are in M259-23, family #35245
