- - - - - from before William's birth (May 1883) until the 1890 Directory - - - - -

His middle name is "Robert" on the application for his second marriage, but is "Richard" on his Social Security application. On the papers for his first marriage, his name is William Winge Jr.

Four siblings were born before William:  Adelheid (Adeline) E. * (23 Apr. 1876), Hedwig M. ( 13 Sept. 1877), Martha (Jan. or Feb. 1880), and Margaretha (2 Sep. 1881). Margaretha died 28 June 1882 at the age of 10 months and Martha may have died in Nov. 1880 in the U.S.

William's birth is recorded on the Register of Births-City of St. Louis on 19 May 1883 (Register #3249, vol. 70, p. 626). This record shows the family living at 609 Rutger. His mother's name is given as Martha Teighgraber [sic!]. The Rev. Father Frei is the informant; perhaps he is from St. Anthony R. C. Church.
In the index to births and deaths, his last name is incorrectly spelled "Winger".

The 1883 St. Louis City Directory shows his father, cabinet maker, living at 609 Rutger. The 1884 Directory shows his father, a fitter, living at 1222 S. 9th St. (he is the only Winge listed). The 1885 Directory shows his father, a carpenter, living at 1220 S. 9th. (again he is the only Winge).

Brother Robert Winge (-2G) was born on 30 May 1885 in St. Louis.

The 1886 Directory lists the father, William Winge, carpenter, living at 1220 S. 9th.

His brother Robert Winge died 18 Oct. 1886. He (also his parents and siblings) was living at 3811 Texas Ave. in St. Louis. This appears in the St. Louis Death Register, vol. 19, p. 72 (SLGS 320). This is the same address that is in the St. Louis City Directory of 1887 for the father Wilhelm Winge, therefore I am thinking Robert was a son who died as an infant. He was 1 year, 4 months and 15 days old when he died so he was born and died between the births of William and Frances. he was also buried at Ste. Peter and Paul Cemetery in St. Louis.

Sister Frances Winge (-2G) was born on 23 Oct. 1886 in St. Louis.

The 1887 Directory lists his father William Winge, cabinet maker, residing at the rear of 3811 Texas Ave.

Sister Emma Winge (-2G) was born on 26 Sep. 1888 in St. Louis. Brother Aloys Winge (-2G) was born on 26 Nov. 1890 in St. Louis.

The 1890 Census was destoyed; only summaries and non-personal information is available. However the 1890 St. Louis Directory shows his father William Winge, a carpenter, living at 3742 Oregon Ave. The 1891 Directory shows him as a cabinet maker, living at the same address. The 1892 Directory shows him as a cabinet maker, living on the north side of Neosho, near 16th St.

- - - - - from after the 1890 Directory until after the 1900 Census - - - - -

Brother Johann (John) Winge (-2G) was born on 21 Nov. 1892 in St. Louis.

The 1893 and 1894 Directories list him as a carpenter living on the north side of Neosho, near 17th St.

Brother Theodore Winge (-2G) was born on 14 May 1894 in St. Louis.

The 1895 Directory calls him a cabinet maker, living at the same address. The 1896 Directory also calls him a cabinet maker, but he is living at 4449 S. 17th St.

Here is a picture of the Winge house (either on Neosho or on 17th St). Grape vines are seen on the right porch. On the left porch we see what appears to be William and his wife Martha (older people on the right). The two younger women on the left side of the porch may be their daughters Hedwig and Adeline. The two girls in front of the house may be the younger daughters Frances and Emma. I do not know the man with the cow. Dated ca 1894-97.

The 1897-99 Directories list William, cabinet maker, living at 4460 S. 17th St. All of these listings to this point refer to the father Wilhelm [William Sr.]. The 1898 St. Louis Directory also lists William Winge, shoe, living at 4460 S. 17th (the same address as that listed for his father).

He is listed with his parents in the 1900 Missouri Census (district 179, sheet 6, line 48) for St. Louis. His father Wilhelm is born in Dec. 1851 in Germany and is 48 years old. The father's occupation is cabinet maker, he can read and write inc. English. He owns his house at 4460 South 17th St. in St. Louis. He has been in the U.S. for 20 years. William's mother Martha is 42 years old, born in Sept. of 1854 in Germany, her parents also born in Germany. Also listed is William's sister Adelheid, born in Apr 1880 which disagrees with other sources. Adelheid (later called Adeline) is a dressmaker and her birthplace is Germany. Wilhelm (of this page; later called William) was born May 1883 in Missouri, is 17 years old, but was not at school. A sister Francis (sic!, Frances) was born Oct. 1886 in Missouri, is 13 years old, and was at school. A sister Emma was born Sept. 1888 in Missouri, is 11 years old, and was at school. A brother Alois is 9, was born in Missouri in Nov. 1890, and was at school. A brother Johann (later called John) was 7, was born in Nov. 1892, and was at school. A brother Theodore was 6, born in Missouri in May 1894, but was not at school. His sister Martha, who came over on the ship, died before 1900.

I am not sure that I have located his Census listing for 1910 (see just below). However, the 1910 and 1911 St. Louis Directories list William R. Winge, motorman, living at 3125 Meramec.

The 1910 Census for Barry Monet, Missouri (Soundex 003 0004 0050) lists a William W. Winge, born in Missouri, 27 years old, living with a Flore Derickson. The age matches our William Winge. I need to do further research but our William is not listed in the 1910 Census of his parents on 4460 17th St.

When William married Hattie Earl on 7 Aug. 1911, he was living at 3125a Meramec St. in St. Louis and was 28 years old. Hattie was living at 4220 Virginia Ave. and was 29 years old. They were married by a Justice of the Peace in St. Louis. (license #166759; ledger vol. 75, page 485.)
Here is a picture of members of the Winge, Ricklin and Thoma families from ca 1911 or 1912. William is the man seated in the front row with the bow tie but no jacket.  His wife Hattie Earl is in the front on our right next to the boy who is my father.  Click thumbnail to enlarge.

The 1913 St. Louis Directory lists William Winge Jr., saloon, 3304 Meramec. The 1916 Directory shows William Winge Jr., saloon, 3100 Neosho. The 1917 Dir. does not list him.

He registered for the WWI draft on 12 Dec.(?) 1918 (roll 1683752, board 13, order #1120). This registration gives his age as 35 and his birthdate as 19 May 1883. His address was 4527a Idaho Ave. in St. Louis and he was a carpenter for Am. Car & [?] Co. located at 2800 DeKalb St. in St. Louis. He was born in Missouri of parents born in Germany. He occupation is chauffeur for a wholesale grocer. He was not a war veteran [though he did serve in the military]. His wife Hattie is living there too. She is 45 years old, born in Missouri of parents also born in Missouri. Both were married at age 28. The ages given in the Census sheet do not match that obtained from calculations using the St. Louis Registry of Births, their marriage application and other records [William should be 46 and Hattie should be 46 or 47.] They own the house at 7533 Folk Ave. which is valued at $6,000. The household has a radio. Both William and Hattie are not in school but can read, write, and speak English. Living with them is a Maudare [?] Dressman who may be William's mother-in-law. She is 73 years old, born in Missouri of Missouri parents. She is a widow who was first married at age 19 but may have remarried [explaining the different surname from Hattie's maiden name].
