He was born ca. 1852 somewhere in Connecticut. I do not have additional birth information. |
I have not found him in the 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1900 Censuses.
I do not know if he was married before or had any children. I do not know when his parents died.

He married the widow Josephine Vossler (née Oberfoell) (-3G) in St. Louis. The license was issued on 15 July 1905 (Book 9, p. 388). William was ca. 53 and Josephine was ca. 36. |
The 1910 Fed. Census for Missouri (Soundex ID 089 0112 0184, supv. dit. 11, enum. dist 112, sheet 9A, dwelling 164, family 184, dated 03 May) shows the family living at 7555 Woodland Ave. in ward 4 of Maplewood, a suburb of St. Louis. William J. McLaren, is 58 and was born in Connecticut of Scottish-born parents. He was a cabinet maker in a cabinet shop. His wife Josephine, 41, and has no occupation. She wa born in Missouri of German-born parents. Living with them are William's step children: Irene Vossler, 10, and Eugene Vossler, 8. Both were born in Missouri.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch of 21 Sept. 1910 has an obituary on p. 9 for a William Henry McLaran. There is burial notice in the 22 Sept. but this is not our William.
He and his family moved to LosAngeles County, CA between 1910 and 1920.
The 1920 Fed. Census for California (supv. dist. 8, enum. dist. 10, sheets 5B and 6A, dwelling 151, family 150, dated 24 January) finds the family living at 4660 Hammel St. in Precinct 6 of Belvedere Township, Los Angeles County. William McLaren is 68 and is a house carpenter. He was born in Connecticut; his parents in Scotland. His wife, Josephine, is 51 and has no occupation. She was born in Missouri; her parents in Germany. Daughter Irene is 19 and is a cashier in a department store. Irene was born in Misouri; her [step-] father in Connecticut, her mother in Missouri. Son Eugene (on the next page) is 17 and is a house carpenter's helper (presumable helping his step father). He was born in Missouri; his [step-] father in Connecticut, his mother in Missouri. The last names of the children are not given.

He died between the Census schedules of 1920 and 1930, perhaps in California. In the 1930 Census Josephine is called a widow. I do not have more information at this time. |
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch of 29 Aug. 1920 has an obituary on p. 9B for a William R. McLaren. This man was born in St. Louis but our William was born in Conn. The MO Archives has his death certificate which shows that he was only 18 so he cannot be our William McLaren. Besides it is probable that our man was living in California when he died.
There is no other William McLaren between 1910 and 1927 in this St. Louis obituary index. He may have died in California.
-----------------------------
A William G. McLaren, born on 26 Feb. 1907 in Connecticut, died in Los Angeles on 04 Oct. 1977 at the age of 70. However this man could not have married Josephine Oberfoell in 1905--he was not yet born in 1905.
His wife Josephine died sometime after the 1930 Census, perhaps in California
His step-son Eugene Vossler died 01 Oct. 1983 in Riverside, California I do not know when his step-daughter Irene died..
