The hobby of model railroading has been with us for almost as long as the real railroads. One segment of the hobby, Garden Railroading, has grown rapidly in the late 1990's. These G Gauge (Garden Gauge) trains are fun, and they bring out the hobbyist's creativity in new and exciting ways. Whether powered by battery, DC current, or live steam, they capture imagination and interest.
G-Day has been a grass roots project from the very beginning. It emerged from a commitment to grow the hobby, and from the idea of setting aside June 21st, 1998, the "longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere," as a time to hold events targeted at sharing our hobby with others. Discussions on the Big-Trains@lists.cirr.com internet mailing list soon uncovered an international interest in such an event.
Garden Railroad enthusiasts from North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand held open houses, hosted operating sessions, and spread the word about the fun of the hobby. From that simple idea has grown the recurring celebration that brings us this tour.

A Special Note:
A very special thanks to Pete Eggink, Steve Condiff, Brad and Barbara Moore, and Chris Petka. With out their help (and an occasional strong push), this years G-day would have been much more difficult to organize. A hearty thanks to all the hosts who have opened up their homes and layouts to promote the hobby of Garden Railroading. This year the tour has grown to two weekends, all of Delaware and surrounding Maryland, and 37 open houses featuring 23 different layouts. Wow! Quite a ways from my first G-day in 1998 when I had just one father and child stop by on a rainy day.
Finally, a thank you to all the visitors. Your photos, smiles, laughs, questions, and joy for our hobby are the reasons we share the hobby we all love so dearly. See you next year.
