Matthias Wing, the son of Joseph Wing & Amy Pettis was born November 28, 1813 at Luzerne, New York. He was the 4th child out of 9 children, 2 of which died in infancy. Matthias was about 22 years old when his folks packed up their belongings and headed for Illinois in 1835. Matthias Wing was 24 years old when he took the 16 year old Elizabeth Chenoweth as his bride on December 24, 1837. Hopefully their years together were happy ones because Elizabeth was not destined to live to be very old. She did give birth to 4 sons before her death on September 11, 1848;
Commodore Perry Wing, born January 7, 1839 Samuel Joseph Wing, born August 13, 1842 John William Wing, born May 25, 1845 Norman Allen Wing, born September 1, 1846.
When Elizabeth died, Matthias found himself with 4 sons under the age of 11...the youngest being only 2 years old. There is little doubt that Matthias turned to his mother, Amy Pettis Wing, for her assistance in raising his young sons. We do know that Matthias married for the 2nd time to Mrs. Lavina Bennet on October 15, 1848 at Pike County, Illinois. The men in this particular line of the family did not let much grass grow under their feet once they lost their wives....Matthias married Mrs. Bennett a little over a month after his wife, Elizabeth, died. They did not have any children together.
Matthias outlived his second wife who died in 1877. Matthias live to be almost 83 years old...he died on August 27, 1896 at Lehi, Utah. |
