Each applicant for the scholarship shall submit an essay demonstrating
his/her interest in and knowledge of American History, and explaining how
he/she can be effective in furthering the goals and purposes of the Sons
of the Revolution. While the exact subject is left up to the applicant, the
winning essay will be selected on the basis of its potential to motivate
others to perform acts in support of the goals of the Sons of the Revolution.
An essay could describe how an organization like the Sons of the Revolution
can develop awareness of and interest in the beginnings of our nation and
help us to recall the sacrifices that accompanied its birth and underscore
the wisdom which devised a system of checks and balances under which all
can find an area of opportunity and achieve a full measure of freedom. Another
essay might describe how a study of family history and genealogy resulted
in the discovery of a revolutionary war ancestor and instilled pride that
motivated similar couragous acts by a modern day student.
The essays will be evaluated on their historical accuracy, entertainment
value and their ability to motivate action on the part of the reader to preserve
for succeeding generations the principles of freedom and good government
for which our forefathers fought.
We prefer to award this scholarship to a graduate of a Tennessee High School,
