The Skinny on Anorexia
Media Mania

"Victims of anorexia are generally perfectionists, over-acheivers, and leaders. They're caring, sensitive and they generally have very high expectations for themselves." With each word, each description, a new pair of eyes glanced my way. Our health speaker continued her speech, sealing my fate, "They're often seen as the person least likely to contract any disease, much less a disease of the mind. They're often times very intelligent and put-together, out-going and very friendly. They care about the world and, for one reason or another, become anorexic. Are there any questions?"
I glanced at my desk, refusing to meet the gaze of any of my classmates who were staring unfailingly at me and pretending they weren't. They already thought I was too thin, but now that they knew the personality traits of an anorexia victim, I was labeled an "Anorexic in Denial." For the rest of class I kept receiving pity looks. I could read the "poor, poor, Bri," in their eyes. "I'll bet she doesn't even know!"
Now, I know I'm thin for my height of 5'9", for most any height, but, in all rationality, I shouldn't be. I eat all the time and, since I'm afraid of vomiting, I don't binge and purge in the fashion of a bulimic, which is what many people think I do. I live on popcorn and chocolate with an occasional bowl of macaroni and cheese thrown in for good measure. Should I be punished for being a genetical freak with a high-metabolism? Is it my fault I have a predisposition for dealing with my food's fat and chemicals quicker than most people? No, and I'm tired of hearing about it.
I read article after article about how too many teens are thin these days and about how to spot the warning signs in your friends. But where are the articles that tell you how to deal when you're falsely accused of being anorexic? Where are the articles entitled, "What To Do When Your Under Constant and Bothersome Scrutiny For Being Thin?" Where are the doctors that promise to heal the emotional scars you'll have by age 30 because everyone assumes that you're battling an eating disorder? Where are all of those things, huh?
Here's my point, my little message to society: Not everyone who is naturally thin or just too tall for their weight is anorexic. It's called a genetical mix-up and it's not our fault. Stop the paranoia. Stop assuming everyone who isn't overweight is that way because of an eating disorder. To the media, in defense of the people who can't help but be skinny, leave us alone. We are the way we are because we can't help it. Stop telling us that we're not just naturally little; stop telling us we have to be anorexic.

This article is revolved around how the media makes something big out of any little thing they can get their hands on. After all, they must always have a new story to talk about. As you may already know, there is a big issue of bad Catholic priests. This is a perfect example of how the media can blow things way out of proportion. Out of the hundreds of thousands, maybe millions of Catholic priests in the world, several are bound to be bad. That's just the way the world works. However, this does not mean the Catholic Church is corrupt. I can almost guarantee you if some Jewish Rabbi sexually molested a girl , the media would NOT make a big issue out of it. But you cannot blame the whole church for it and assume they are all like that. After, the Catholic Church does more good than bad. The bad Catholic Priests will be punished, and wont get away with the terrible acts now. The priests doing their jobs of good work will hopefully continue doing good.
Signed,
Kristen H.

International AIDS Conference

Last year a 14 week long International Aids conference was held. About 14,000 scientists, doctors and activists are meeting in Barcelona, Spain to discuss the frightening AIDS epidemic sweeping through Africa. Officials say that AIDS is the worst epidemic to face mankind, nearly 40 million people are infected worldwide, and the future isn’t looking good one study presented at the conference indicated that the percentage of people being diagnosed with the un-treatable from of AIDS is on the increase. As of now 20% of adults is seven sub-Saharan countries have AIDS think thats bad, in Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho, and Zimbabwe one in three adults have the virus. It is also believed that as the virus spreads into Asia and Eastern Europe the virus may claim as many as 70 million lives. The epidemic is also expected to greatly effect the African workforce, by 2010 more than 25% of the workforce is expected to be killed in several African countries. Already in Kenya AIDS accounts for 75% of the deaths in the police force. In Swaziland 6,000 new teachers will be needed in the next 17 years to maintain services because of AIDS. AIDS is also having very adverse effects on African life expectancy rates as well population and growth rates. The life expectancy in 11 countries is expected to drop bellow 40 because of AIDS. One report assumes that the average life expectancy in Botswana and Mozambique will drop to only 27 years. Without AIDS the life expectancies in many South African countries would be 70 by the year 2010, instead by 2010 it is expected that the number of deaths will out pace the number of births in 5 countries which will cause the populations to fall. The future may not look good however the company VaxGen expects to have an AIDS vaccine in production by 2005. New medication together with AIDS education may help to off set the current trends, lets hope that some promising news and developments come from this conference.
