Fishing 2004
Fishing Highlights 2004

Halibut fishing was so amazing, it requires its own page.
Because we have such a good king/chinook salmon season in Santa Cruz, we really don't concentrate on salmon fishing while we're in Alaska.  For us, the big prizes are halibut and rock cod.  We mostly catch and release, since we only keep what we can carry in our cooler.  We also enjoy sharing our fish with other boaters who don't fish.

The commercial salmon season was going very well this year (2004).  Prices for kings are up, and the commercial folks are finally able to get a decent price for their fish.  The public is starting to become better-educated about the virtues of line-caught, carefully-handled wild salmon, which is good for everyone: the consumer, the fishermen, and the ecosystem.  The mood around the docks was very upbeat this year.  It was great to be around the commercial folks, during this time.
Golden eye. He's really pretty!  We did not catch him on purpose...
We released all the ling cod we caught, including this monster.
Matt, a commercial troller from Elfin Cove, with a representative sample of his catch.
Crabbing was excellent, both in size and quality of crabs.  Particularly good places were Hoonah and Tenakee Inlet.
The big rubber grub lure that Shawn's  holding, is what caught a large number of fish, including the really big halibuts.
