Fish Highlights from the Tonie O 2002/2003

The voyages of the Tonie O place more emphasis on sightseeing than fishing. However fishing does occur, and it's spectacular. Since we don't have a lot of storage aboard, fishing is mostly catch and release. I also usually discourage Shawn from boating any large halibut, due to their rowdy and potentially destructive nature. Some exceptions to that rule happened this year (2004), during which a 73 pound halibut was hoisted aboard. We also pulled into Funter's Bay with an estimated 115 pound halibut tied to the side of the boat. Some size charts estimate a 65 inch halibut to weigh around 140 pounds. All we know is that Shawn could not lift it, and that fish was waaaay bigger than me. In 2002 and 2003 The Dixon Entrance offered some of the most phenomenal fishing. Conditions were unusually calm, and the area in front of the last U.S. lighthouse before returning to Canada was evidently carpeted with Halibut. Halibut, ling cod, and salmon came up with every drop of the Diamond Jig. Below are just a few representative photos of some of the catches.

Dixon Salmon. We already get too much salmon at home, so we try to release as many as possible.

Crabbing was good everywhere in the Passage. These were from Port Townsend.

Ketchikan Golden Eye Rock Cod. Seems like everything is bigger in Alaska. (They really like Diamond jigs).
