LeConte Glacier
LeConte Glacier and Ice Bergs
LeConte Glacier is a short run just southwest of Petersburg, Alaska.  Before we approached the bay, Shawn saw distant white objects on the horizon, which he took to be a fleet of fishing boats.  I knew better: "No, honey, that's ice."  The fleet was a ghostly group of white and deep blue icebergs pushed out by the tide.  Sometimes the icebergs travel as far as Wrangell Narrows. We approached at low ebb and stared in amazement at the infinate shapes, sizes, structures, textures, and colors of each iceberg, ranging from deep blue to green to crystal.

From Shawn's log:
"Tonie delighted the cruise with an excellent chicken with mushrooms, olives, tomatoes, and tequila (an onboard variation of her chicken marengo).  I mean it was a four-star meal with glacial ice as a backdrop!"
As the tide started to come back in, we realized that we needed to avoid any re-enactment of the Titanic.  The glacier was calving heavily, and the bergs began to move in quickly once the tide changed.  It was time for a careful exit.  We also saw numerous orcas in this bay.  But they're too quick for my digital camera.
