103 pounds
Senior Evan Zupko has owned this starting spot for the past four
years. Because of academic problems, last was his first
year of competing in area and state. He won first p;ace
in area and made it to the quarterfinal round of the
state tournament before being eliminate. He won 42
matches (52 if counting forfeits) last season and was
first or second in every tournament he wrestled. The only
factor that could keep him out of the hunt for a state
championship is his weight. He and his doctor have
concluded that he can safely wrestle 103 this season.
112 pounds
Sophomore Randolph Jackson has worked hard during the off-season to learn
the required techniques for this position. He naturally
weights under 103, so he will be available at 103 in the
event Evan Zupko is too heavy. More likely, he will be a
light 112 pounder who will give us points by being a
smart wrestler. Sophomore Terry Hilton is capable of
giving Randolph a run for the starting spot.
119 pounds
Sophomore Chuck Gaughf will join the list of champions at this weight
class. He wrestled 112 last year and was an area champion
and set the school record for the most wins by a freshman
at 30 (39 with forfeits). He has placed in several
National High School Coaches Invitational Tournaments and
has attended at least one wrestling camp every summer.
125/130 pounds
Junior Gamie Patten will be the wrestler to beat at this weight. He
won 26 matches his freshman year and then hurt his ankle
during his sophomore season and still was the region
bonze medalist. He will be ready this season. Sophomore Shane Stinson will be one of the leading competitors at his
weight. He was runner-up at 119 last year, but will have
to work hard to make it to the finals this year.
135 pounds
Freshman Joey Knox is the wrestler to beat in this weight class in
Georgia. He has worked hard during the season and during
the off-season to be a nationally ranked wrestler. His
runner-up finish inthe National High School Coaches
Invitational Tournament and his first place finish in
several regional tournaments mark him as one of the best
freshman in the nation. However, there will be a lot of
upper classmen who will be eager to welcome him to high
school. Senior Brian
Whittle is one of the
top candidates.
140 pounds
Junior Will Knox is the top candidate for this position. Will
maybe one of the most technically proficient wrestlers
and scored many tough upset victories last year. His
runner-up at 130 marked him as one of the top wrestlers
in our region. He is eager to show everyone that he is
the best wrestler at this weight.
145 pounds
Junior Joe Walker has improved year by year and is ready to be
the region champion this year. He was runner-up last year
and has been working hard to settle the score from last
year.
152 pounds
Sophomore Gabriel Riley worked very hard this summer at the Fellowship
of Christian Athletes wrestling camp to gain the
foundational techniques required to be an outstanding
wrestling.
160 pounds
There are several wrestlers ready to
take this position. Senior Jimmy Fraley will miss the first part of the season due to
academic ineligibility. However, he was the 152 region
champion last year and should be ready to wrestle. Junior
Jacob
Hancock worked hard
during the FCA wrestling camp and will pull the slack in
the first semester and may be able to earn the varsity
slot on his own record. Freshman Jonathan Clark had a good cross country season and is a strong
athlete who can make a difference this year.
171 pounds
The loser of the wrestle-off at 160
will wrestle at 171 pounds. However, we are looking for
the athlete who weights 171 pounds that can lead us to a
region championship. Two football players will help out
here. Freshman Kelsey
Howington and
Sophomore JoJuan
Green.
189/215 pounds
Senior Jerrico Jackson worked hard during the off-season and learned
some techniques that will improve his third place finish
from last year. Senior Scott Hayes moved in from Birmingham and will improve our
team at these weights. In addition, Freshman Kyle Howington will help.
275 pounds
This weight class is wide open. We have
not been strong in this class since Robin Bailey was area
champion in 1998. We believe that we can find the
athletes who will excel in the heavyweight class.
