THE "JUNKYARD DOG"
Well, "Junkyard Dog" is an interesting story. Basically, the “Junkyard Dog” is just that, a “Junkyard Dog.” Brother Ed and Brother Tom were determined to replace the former “Thunderchicken,” having no faith in the car’s ability to withstand a crash and protect Brother Joe’s svelte body.
So, Brother Ed had been speaking with Earl from Earl’s Towing regarding this, and Earl made the kind offer of allowing us to come to his junkyard and look around for a prospect. To this end, Brother Ed and Brother Tom proceeded, with Earl guiding, traversing through the junkyard… we looked at the Cadillac Hearse… nah… the Winnebago… funny, but nah…. the Chevy Chevette… remember the “½ Horse” car last year… nah…. so, we settled upon the Buick, which was actually the first car we perused.
Earl backed up to her, hooking his tow truck to the front, and lifted her straight up in the air for inspection! We stood in awe…. The car was rock solid, although a few minor rust bits on the body, the frame (a full perimeter frame, which is a very desirable item) was in excellent shape. Ed and Tom nodded… let’s try her… so, a tow strap and long drive on a hot day put the new prospect into the field on Beeny Road. She’s a 1976 Buick Regal four door, which will be replacing the doomed “Thunderchicken.”
Enter a battery (stolen from the “Thunderchicken,” which was originally stolen from Tom’s boat), some fresh gasoline, a set of jumper cables, and a little priming, and the new “Junkyard Dog” roared to life. Within ½ hour of arrival, the “Junkyard Dog” was running, and meaner than hell.
Currently, the "Junkyard Dog" is sitting in the driveway, fully painted. Laura finished the last of the interior painting today (September 21) and Caitlin painted the flames on the hood. The cage is in and all welded, thanks to Brother Ed and Butts. She is solid, with the drivers protection neatly routed through the pillar (four door car). The doors are back on and have been welded shut. Cables will be installed on the drivers door as an additional safety measure. The car is ready for a tune-up, change of fluids, she's got four new snow tires and is awaiting safety rims, and lettering. The fuel cell has been installed in the trunk, and the lines are pending connection. This car is coming together nicely and is solid as a rock.
We feel confident that the "Junkyard Dog" is going to be an excellent warrior on the track, with Brother Joseph at the helm.
So, the "Junkyard Dog" will appear in this year's Halloween Enduro race, 2002, for her first run.
