BRIDGE BABIES - FERRETS
Page 1
And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end, the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance,
I could have missed the pain,
But I'd have had to miss, the dance.

~ From:  The Dance by Garth Brooks
Froderick was our #1 Son and he knew it. He was pretty much a loner. His favorite things to do when we lived in the apartment were to move a 12 lb anchor that we used as a door stop so the other ferrets couldn't run from the bedroom to the bathroom, and to dig food out of the food bowls while caged, no matter what time of day or night. He HATED being in the cage. When I told him we were buying a house and he and his siblings would have their own room and he wouldn't be caged anymore, he gave me kisses.
Ab wasn't with us very long. She was a lot like Inga in that she was a real sweetheart. She would stand up for herself, though, if the other ferrets would try to rough house with her, whereas Inga would cry.  She looked so much like Inga, at times it was difficult to tell them apart.  She was our first ferret loss.
Igor loved baseball caps so much that my husband bought him his very own. A child's cap that says "Center of the Universe" on it. Igor knew that was his hat and he treated it like it was his baby. It had to be in his hidey hole at all times. If it was moved, he'd search it out and move it back to his hidey hole, then tend to it until he felt it was safe. I found him many times curled up with his hat. He'd even climb people to steal their hats. He stole one of my brother's caps while he was ferret sitting. I found it under our bed several days after we'd gotten home. My brother thought it was so cute that Igor climbed on his laundry basket to steal the IU cap, that he let Igor keep it.
Inga was a very sweet, fragile, little girl. She didn't mind being held and freely gave kisses. She didn't pay much attention to the other ferrets, and prefered to be alone or with her humans. If there was a sweatshirt or sweatpants on the floor, you could bet she'd be curled up in them asleep.
Elizabeth was a little crocodile. She'd lick, lick, lick, CHOMP on my arm and then crocodile roll with whatever flesh she could bite hold of it. It hurt some, but the girl was possessed about doing it. Early on, I tried to break her of this, but she was having no part of it, so I gave in and obliged her. Elizabeth was also a kisser. She loved to kiss our faces. She was a very sweet ferret and really never got into trouble.
Hans loved tools. He tried to make off with a metal tape measure that had rubber on the outside of it for gripping numerous times. Because of the rubber, he couldn't have the tape measure. He would watch where I put it and then spend mega amounts of time trying to figure out how to get to it. His hidey hole was inside the workings of the dryer. The ferrets could get in there through an opening in the front of the dryer. When we moved the dryer to the house, we found all kinds of things that he'd stashed, including a snake light. We were amazed that he'd gotten some of the things inside the dryer, the snake light being one of them. I always made sure all the ferrets were in their cage before running the dryer.
Helga was a sweet girl and who insisted on giving kisses, although if she could get to your earlobe, she'd pierce it for free. ;)  She was a wee one, as you can see by how small she is compared to Eddie's big butt in this picture. She usually weighed around 1 lb.  Everyone who saw her always thought she was a baby.  I'm so grateful she found a forever home with us, because she came from a home where she was ignored. We will miss our wee little girl.
Madelyn, my little note taker. She was so funny. I could just picture her with her little pad of paper and pencil taking notes as she watched whatever ferret was doing something s/he shouldn't, trying to get all the steps down to later try some naughtiness herself. She never did, or at least she was never caught. She was such a sweet girl.
Rusty was such a sweet boy. He'd come from a single ferret home and, although he enjoyed sleeping with the other ferrets, he was a loner most of the time. He would ocassionally play with the others and weasel war dance. His favorite thing to do was to attempt escape of their room. I still watch for him to try to escape when I'm in the ferret room and the door is open.  Of all our animal who've been called to the Bridge, Rusty has most touched my heart.
Charlie was such a bundle of energy. Whenever I opened the ferret room door and he was out, he'd take off running at breakneck speed and hide, then peek out at me as if I'd caught him being naughty.

He had the biggest feets of any ferret I've ever seen. I will so miss rubbing his paws between my fingers and thumbs.
I bragged on Gracie for years that she was the only one of my ferrets who was 100% litter box trained. She was a sweet girl, very dignified, and never got into any trouble. Her story before coming to live with us is a sad one, that I may never post here. I'm just so grateful that she was able to live with us for about 4 1/2 years without the fear of what caused her to be rehomed with us.
