  • What is Hypnosis?

It might be better, sometimes, to describe what hypnosis is NOT, since there are so many misconceptions out there. When they think of hypnosis, many people think of stage hypnosis, where people "are put under a spell" and are made to look foolish or to do things they would never do in front of others when awake... These are unfortunate views of an approach to self-help which can be one of the most powerful and useful therapies available.

Here are 10 basic characteristics of modern hypnosis:

  • It has at its core a deep relaxation state for the participant, putting him or her wonderfully at ease while the therapist aims to move past the conscious mind's critical state (which questions, analyzes, doubts all that it perceives...) to reach the powerful subconscious mind that is within all of us.
  • It aims to maximize the potential for change that is in each person, helping the person to realize that change is both possible and necessary.
  • It encourages the person to look forward to what he or she can be, rather than what the person fears he or she is or must be.
  • It facilitates the setting of short, mid and long term goals.
  • It demands that a person identify problems and causes of problems for what they are, unhidden by other problems or secondary gains.
  • It establishes what a person must do to accomplish real change in one's life.
  • It strengthens one's coping strategies.
  • It allows one to let go of past negative events or emotions and focuses efforts toward positive future goals.
  • All hypnosis is SELF hypnosis. The therapist is only a facilitator, a guide, a map which the person uses along his or her own journey...
  • Its success is wholy determined by the desire of the individual for change.
