Caring For Your Rag Rug
MeMe, of MeMe's Originals tells us how to keep rug colors from bleeding.  Take a cup or more of vinegar (any kind) and pour it in your washer at the lowest water level, and soak your new rug for at least an hour in cold water.  If your rug is too large for a low level of water, then just add more vinegar accordingly, then wash in cool water with mild detergent.  This will set most colors in with a few exceptions.
Also, adding fabric softener in your rinse cycle helps your rug to resist spills and stains.
If you have a shag rug, you may want to give the threads a trim with each washing
