Red, White, Blue
Size J crochet hook (for square)
Size G crochet hook (for heart)

Stitches used:
Beg Cluster: ch 2, holding last lp of each st on hook, work 2 dc in same sp, YO, draw thru all 3 lps on hook. (beg cl made)
Cluster: holding last lp of each st on hook, work 3 dc in sp indicated, YO, draw thru all 4 lps on hook. (cl made)
V-st: (dc, ch 1, dc) in sp indicated.
Beg Shell: ch 3, in same sp work (dc, ch 2, 2 dc)
Shell: (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in sp indicated
Ldc: Work dc into stitch 2 rows below, pulling yo thru stitch below to the height of the current row.
Square Instructions:
Rnd 1: With white, ch 2, work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join with sl st to beg sc. (6 sc)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same st, ch 1, (sc in next sc, ch 1) around, join with sl st to beg sc. (6 ch-1 sps)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in same st, (ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in next sc) around, end with ch 1, sc in last ch-1 sp, ch 1, join with sl st to beg sc. (12 ch-1 sps)
Rnd 4: Slip st in ch-1 sp, work beg cl, ch 2, (work cl in next sp, ch 2) around, join with sl st to top of beg cl. (12 cl)
Rnd 5: Slip st in ch-2 sp, ch 1, in same sp work (sc, ch 2, sc), ch 2, *(sc, ch 2, sc) in next sp, ch 2; rep from * around, join with sl st to beg sc; finish off. (24 ch-2 sps)
Rnd 6: Join red with slip st in any ch-2 sp bet cl's, work beg shell, (skip next ch-2 sp, shell in next ch-2 sp bet cl's) around, skip last ch-2 sp, join with sl st to beg dc; finish off. (12 shells)
Rnd 7: Join white with sc in any ch-2 sp of shell, 2 sc in same sp, *working in front of Rnd 6, work V-st in ch-2 sp on Rnd 5, 3 sc in ch-2 sp of next shell; rep from * around, end with last V-st, join with sl st to beg sc, finish off. (36 sc, 12 V-sts)
Rnd 8: Join blue with slip st in ch-1 sp of any V-st, ch 4 (equals first tr), in same sp work (tr, ch w, 2 tr), *dc in next 3 sc, 3 hdc in ch-1 sp of V-st, sc in next 3 sc, 3 hdc in ch-1 sp of next V-st, dc in next 3 sc, in ch-1 sp of V-st work (2 tr, ch 2, 2 tr); rep form * around, end with dc in last 3 sc, join with sl st to beg tr. (16 tr, 24 dc, 12 hdc, 12 sc)
Rnd 9: Ch 3, dc in each st around working (2 tr, ch 2, 2 tr) in each corner sp, end with slip st to beg dc, finish off.
Rnd 10: Join white with ch 4 (counts as first dc plus ch 1), skip next dc, hdc in next dc, *ch 1, (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) in ch 2 corner space (corner made), (ch 1, skip next dc, hdc in next dc) across; rep from * around, end with last ch 1, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch 4, finish off. (48 ch 1 sps, 4 corners)
Rnd 11: Join red with sc in top of previous ch 3, work long double crochet (ldc) in empty dc (below ch sp) on row 9, work sc in next 2 dc on row 10; work (2 sc, ch 2, 2sc) (corner) in corner space; sc in ea of next 2 dc; *ldc in dc on row 9; sc in next dc on row 10. Rep from * across, ending sc in ea of last 2 dc before corner. Work corner as before. Continue in pattern around. End with ldc and join with sl st to beg sc. Finish off.
Rnd 12: Join white with ch 3, dc in each st around working (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in each corner sp, end with slip st to beg dc, finish off.
Rnd 13: Join blue with sc in top of previous ch 3; sc in ea st around working (2 sc, ch 2, 2sc) in corner. Join with sl st to first sc. End off.
Heart instructions:
With G hook and red, ch 3, join with sl st into ring. Ch 3, in ring work: 3 trc, 2 dc, 1 trc, 1 dtrc, 1 trc, 2 dc, 3 trc, ch 3, sl st into ring.
Sl st under ch 3 sp, ch 1, sl st in same ch 3 sp, ch 1; sl st , ch 1 in ea st around to dtrc. In dtrc, work (sl, ch 1, sl, ch 1); continue with sl, ch 1 in ea st around, working (sl, ch 1, sl, ch 1) under last ch 3 sp, and sl into ring. End off.
Sew heart with yarn to center of square.
