General Info on Chickens
Chickens are divided into three main groups: the layers, the dual purpose, and the meat type. The layers come mainly into the Mediterranean class, the dual purpose come mainly from the American and English classes, and the meat breeds come mainly from the Asian class or are hybrids. (Note: There are exceptions to these rules.)
The layers include such famous breeds as the leghorns (e.g. white, brown, and buff), the Minorcas (e.g. black and buff), Anconas, the Golden Comet, the various Sex-Links, and many others.
The dual purpose include such famous examples as the Plymouth Rocks (e.g. barred, white, and buff), the Rhode Island Red (single and rose comb), the New Hamphisre Red, the Wyandottes (e.g.white, silver laced, and golden laced), the Orpingtons (buff and white), and the Black Australorps.
The meat type birds are mainly hybrids (Cornish Cross) and Asian breeds (Cochins and Brahmas) though these too could be used as a dual-purpose.

A General Guide to Raising Chickens
There are many questions that people have when they consider purcahising a flock of chickens.
1.) Where should I buy my chicks?,
2.) When should I buy my chicks?, and
3.) What do I do with my chicks once they have arrived?

The first question to answer is whether or not you want to raise chickens in the first place. If you do then you must first make some very important decisions before purchasing your birds.
Once you have decided that you want to purchase chiks, you must then answer the three questions mentioned above.
