Bargaining Update
12-26-2001
Fellow Union Brothers and Sisters,
It is incumbent upon me as Vice-President of Local 50 to establish the communications between members and non-members. My goal is to update on a monthly basis, the Local #50 union web site.
Currently, the union is in a transition. At this time we do not have a contract in place and as such we are limited to the things we, as a union, can do for you. The Company, Am-Gard, has offered a limited Union Security Provision but this is not enough. Without a contract in place it becomes very difficult to enforce and substantiate any policies for our members.
On January 16, 2002, we, the security officers, have the opportunity to band together in unity and establish a strong contingency within this union. On January 16, we have the opportunity to vote and ratify the contract and solidify this union. We need your support and your vote for the Colorado Peace Act. This Act will provide for union security and the protection of the Union’s right to service the Collective Bargaining Agreement, herein called (CBA). The Union Security Provision / Colorado Peace Act Election are the difference between strong enforcement of the CBA. Without this provision we will not have the power enforce the contract. The Colorado Peace Act is a Vote that requires 75% of the employees in the bargaining unit to vote for allowing a Union Security Provision into the CBA. We can have the kind of security that ensures a lasting Union which can protect your employment. A “YES!” vote for Union Security is a vote for protection for every member!
We currently have a tentative agreement, herein called (T/A), in place. We will take this T/A back to the members of Local #50 for ratification. The big issue is still Union Security. Under the State of Colorado Law (the Colorado Peace Act) we must have a State election that will dictate whether we can have any Union Security Provision in the Collective Bargaining Agreement at all.
Please review the following Bargaining Update. On December 3, 2001, the Company verbally increased their wage proposal to a 10% for the first year. The Union further believes that we have a T/A as follows:
DENVER METRO
- $11.40hr Wage and $3.45hr H&W beginning March 31, 2002, and
a wage / H&W Re-Opener for Year 2003 to 2004.
COLORADO SPRINGS & PUEBLO
- $10.85hr Wage and $2.13hr H&W beginning March 31, 2002, and
a wage / H&W Re-Opener for Year 2003 to 2004.
The Company has agreed to and bettered their offer on other economic portions of the Union's proposal (e.g. 2 days Bereavement Leave). The Bargaining Committee is encouraged.
Jim Carney, UGSOA Int’l VP, spoke to you, at the Union meeting on December 1, 2001, about the necessity for Local #50 to have Union Security for the protection of the Union’s ability to service the Agreement. I can’t stress this enough, the contract is no good if we cannot enforce it. Only a handful of Union members are currently paying dues. This will not do! Our Treasury and the amount of monies in it will determine our ability to take issues to Court or to Arbitration.
When an actual T/A is reached with Am-Gard the members of Local #50 will have an opportunity to vote to accept or reject the Agreement. Only Members in good standing with the Union will be able to ratify. If you are unsure as to your standing with the Union, contact Gerald Nation or Pat Wood to find out your status.
If you are not a member of Local #50 here is your opportunity to take a stand. Dues are to be mailed by the 18th of each month. Dues are two hours of your pay at the base rate (without Health and Welfare) per month. Please submit your dues, $22.74 and one time initiation fee payment of $10.00 to the following: UGSOA International, 7290 Samuel Dr. Suite 110, Denver, CO 80021 Attn: Treasurer or UGS9A Local #50, P.O. BOX 237, Englewood, CO 80151-0237 Attn: Treasurer. You can also see the address at our web site, http://hometown.aol.com/ugsoa50/news.html.
Without your vote for the Colorado Peace Act we, as a collective bargaining group will lose the ability and the security we need to bargain with Am-Gard and GSA. The fruits of our labor will be for not and the power swings back to Am-Gard. Without this provision we will not be able to enforce the contract.
We, the Union, cannot do this with out your support. It is imperative that all of you take the time to become members, if you are not already, and those who are members to take the time to vote at this crucial time.
I would only ask that each one study the issues, ask questions and make a decision. Remember the decision you make will determine the future of all the security officers.
If you have any questions or do not understand the issues, please feel free to contact me at home on weekends at 303-666-7089 or e-mail at rzureksprint@earthlink.net. I prefer that you e-mail me. This will give me your e-mail so that I can setup a mailing list for future information. If you have a computer please forward your e-mail as soon as possible, so that I can send information via e-mail, which is more efficient than snail mail.
Would you please consider for only $22.74 per month membership fee, you can have peace of mind and job security.
Fraternally,
Ryszard S Zurek
