is it a rescue or puppy what you should go for ?

By Sue Oddy
Tyne, Wear & Tees Boxer Rescue
Boxer Puppy or Boxer Rescue

What is the difference between the two?
There is no difference, some puppies eventually end up as adult dogs in Boxer Rescue. The usual reasons are because a marriage/relationship has broken down, someone has changed their working practices and no longer has time to care for their dog. Over the years we have heard them all, we just need to find them a good new home.

OK, you have decided to buy a new Boxer puppy, where do you go?
Anyone who rings us enquiring about puppies gets the same advice, NEVER buy from the newspapers, get one from a "recognised breeder". We also tell them it is far better to view puppies with an open mind and go to see at least 3 litters. You need to ask all the relevant questions about pedigrees, KC reg., Insurance, injections, feeding habits etc. Make sure the pedigree is for at least 5 generations. Ask if the parents have been heart tested and if so ask what the results were. If all goes well you will eventually get your puppy and take it home where it will be loved, fed, exercised and live to a good age before it passes to Boxer Heaven.

What if it all goes wrong? Where do you go?
Your first phone call should be to the "breeder" you bought it from. Any breeder worth their salt should be able to give you all sorts of advice and help, and as a last resort would suggest you contact Boxer Rescue. Please remember most of the dogs we receive into Rescue are those bred on Puppy Farms, or from the backstreet breeders who are only interested in the money they get from selling puppies. Adult dogs have no monetary value to them. It is not often we get dogs from "recognised breeders". It is not our intention to tell you what a "recognised breeder" is as this description can cover a multitude of opinions.

How do you contact Boxer Rescue?
If your breeder has given you the telephone number, ring them. Contact numbers can also be had from the Kennel Club, local Vets or here on the Internet - www.boxer-rescue.org.uk . Ring your local number and be prepared to answer a long list of questions which may at first seem strange, please make it easy and give all information requested, it makes it easier to find your dog the right home. We are used to all sorts of problems with dogs and as a general rule no healthy dog would ever be put to sleep unless it poses a danger others.

What happens next?
If your request is urgent then the chances are that someone may come and collect your dog immediately but remember it may have to go into kennels and you may be asked to foot the bill. In the majority of cases though your dog may be left with you for a few days while a new home is sought. Most Rescues have some sort of waiting list with people looking to Rescue unwanted dogs but it takes quite a few phone calls to find the right home, the new owners need to be checked for their suitability to take a dog and made aware of any problems that your dog may have. When all is sorted out arrangements will be made for the collection of your dog and you will be asked to sign a Release Form relinquishing ownership of it. You may be asked for a contribution to travel costs. Remember once you have given your dog up it is impossible to get it back.

When your dog goes to its new home regular checks are made to make sure that everything is OK. If you want to find out how things are going you would have to speak to whoever arranged its new home. As you may appreciate costs quickly mount up with telephone, petrol, vets fees all having to be found, we are all voluntary workers and that is why we ask for contributions to costs.

Want to Adopt a Boxer?
Ring your nearest Boxer Rescue. Please be prepared for a grilling, asking about your house, family members, other pets etc. If all goes well someone will make arrangements to come and see you, to ask more questions, and to make you fully aware of some of the pitfalls that can arise. When a dog becomes available we ask as many questions as we can about its habits but not everyone who puts a dog into Rescue tells us the truth as they believe if it has too many bad habits we will not take it, this is not true. Hopefully we will contact you and make arrangements for you to meet the dog and if everything is fine you may be given the opportunity of Adopting it.

How much does it cost?
It is very hard to put a figure on this as each dog has to be treated on its own merits so in general a flat fee is charged for each one regardless of circumstances, each Rescue has its own "price" structure. For some there may be no fee at all, usually for the older dogs or those who need regular veterinary treatment. We recommend that you take Insurance out as well against veterinary treatment for all those unseen problems that may arise. Please don`t think of Rescue as a cheap way of getting a dog, it isn`t, but you have the satisfaction of providing a home for an unwanted dog.

I`ve got a problem you didn`t tell me about?
Speak to whoever you got the dog from. Most Rescue workers have known Boxers for years and if it is a problem they haven`t encountered they will know somebody who has. Most problems arise because the dog feels insecure after having had its routine disrupted but these usually disappear very quickly. Never be stuck, there is always someone to talk to.

All the above is general advice only, each case is different. For more information contact your nearest Boxer Rescue.

FLEAS

Fleas like worms are an every day problem, at some time or another you can expect to encounter the problem.

Fleas are a consequence of the domestic environment that we have created for our own comfort, i.e. central heating, double glazing, & best of all the fitted carpet all make for ideal living conditions all year round.

Adult fleas feed on your dogs blood however they spend the main part of there life in your carpet or in your dogs bedding, or anywhere that is comfortable.

The life cycle of the flea

The life cycle of the flea can last up to six weeks

1: DOG PICKS UP A FLEA FROM ANOTHER ANIMAL.

2: THE FLEA FEEDS & LAYS HUNDREDS OF EGGS THESE LAND ON YOUR CARPET OR IN

THE DOGS BEDDING WITHIN SIXTEEN DAYS THEY HATCH INTO LARVAE.

3: THE LARVAE WILL THEN FIND A NICE DARK PLACE, IT WILL LIVE ON ADULT FLEA

FAECES, DUST, & OTHER MORSELS SUCH AS HUMANS SHED SKIN DANDRUFF ETC.

    FOR UP UNTIL 10 DAYS,

4: THE LARVA WILL SPIN A COCOON FORMING A PUPA, THIS PUPAE STAGE IS

EXTREMELY HARDY & CAN SURVIVE FOR SEVERAL MONTHS IF THE CONDITIONS

     ARE FAVORABLE.

5: UP TO 17 DAYS LATER THE ADULT FLEA WILL EMERGE LOOKING FOR A MEAL.

To tell if your dog has fleas brush him over spread newspaper look for black specs on the paper after

Look carefully at your dogs skin you may see black specks or you may see the bite marks themselves.

An effective way of preventing fleas is to give garlic daily

=================

WORMS

Worms can & do cause ill health in animals especially young puppies

Adult dogs do not suffer illness as puppies do but they contribute more to the spreading of them

TAPEWORMS

Tapeworms are seen to have a flat segmented body & are recognized by single segments or chains that resemble segments of rice.

They appear in the faeces. & cause weight loss & general debility.

Part of the tape worm life cycle occurs in a host , that is the flea therefore the presence of a tapeworm is an indication that there are fleas, therefore treatment against both fleas & tapeworm are given together.

ROUNDWORMS

There are two types tat we are concerned with.

TOXOCARA CANIS. & TOXASCARIS LEONINA

Roundworm (TOXOCARA) can also cause disease in children thorough ingestion of eggs. This provides an indisputable reason for effective control of roundworms.

 LIFE CYCLE OF THE ROUNDWORM.

Adult roundworms live in the intestine & produce hundreds of eggs these are passed in the dogs faeces.

The eggs are resilient to heat or cold & may survive up to 7 years in soil etc.

 SYMPTOMS OF ROUNDWORM.

Left untreated your puppy can suffer an obvious digestive upset, poor growth, thin or out of condition coat, appear listless. pot bellied or tucked appearance.

The roundworm will migrate from the gut to the lungs, this can cause lung damage, coughing, & even pneumonia.

SIMPLE PRECAUTIONS.

Toilet train your puppy to use a place where you can easily clean up & dispose of faeces into the sewer.

Do not allow young children to handle puppies without washing there hands afterwards.

Do not allow or encourage your puppy to lick peoples faces or hands.

CONTROLLING WORMS.

Puppies should be wormed every month adults should be wormed every six months.

Remember that the adult dog may not be showing any signs of worms but is capable of passing large amounts of lava into the environment

===============

What U should look for when buying a puppy

(in no particular order)

Decide on the sex color / markings U want in advance do not settle for a puppy that the breeder is trying to convince U to have

Never buy a puppy because U feel sorry for it

If it is sat in the corner alone looking frightened leave it where it is

Be sure the breeder has bred for improvement of the breed & not just to get that new car etc

Be happy with the environment that the puppy is being raised in

Ask to see heart testing certificate's of the parents (GB)

Here is a list of dogs that are tested & considered suitable for breeding from

heart test list

Look for the puppy to be bright eyed & inquisitive with a fluffy clean coat that feels soft with no obvious odors or discharges from ears/eyes etc

Ask what guarantees & after sales help will U get

Do not be frightened to ask the breeder questions (we hate to be the ones doing all the asking)

Be sure the Sire & dam have the characteristics U are looking for i.e. size/temperament etc

( It is not always possible to see the sire but only in exceptional circumstances will the dam not be available)

Do not buy just because the breeder is local be prepared to travel

be certain that the kennel is not a puppy farm (mill)

(normally obvious by the different breeds of puppies available)

Never purchase from a pet shop

Never purchase from a breeder who does not ask U a lot of questions & seems to just want your money

(the puppies future welfare should be the prime consideration to the breeder)

The tail should be docked  (UK) (read the standard & no flames from the anti docking brigade please)

If phoning around breeders. Do not take too much notice when told " I would not have one from Mrs. - -" as there is a lot of animosity within the breed & a lot of breeders will only recommend puppies from friends Go & decide for yourself

Never buy a puppy on breeding terms without giving it a lot of thought

Never buy if U feel the breeder is giving U a sales pitch
