I've been inspired by Mya (pictured above) to do more to make a difference in the lives of not only the senior dogs, but our senior family members. This photo tells it all!
Pictured above is Margaret who is 94 years young! Next to her with that big sheltie grin is 10+ year old Mya. Mya's story is on our success page.
Mya came to us already a senior and battling a lot of problems. Once we got her healthy and happy again, it was clear to me that she wasn't comfortable living with all these young 'uns coming through here all the time. Since my goal is the best welfare of the dog, an opportunity surfaced that just might give her the happiness she deserved. The biggest hurdle was my own selfish love for her. Thanks to a great friend of mine, she helped me work through it and do what was best for Mya.
I was contacted by a friend on behalf of his mother, Margaret. Margaret had always had dogs...usually, boston terriers. I referred them to boston terrier rescue. Something didn't work out for her there, so they called me back. Suddenly, it hit me. Mya needed a companion to love and Margaret needed a companion to love. What a match!
Well, it's been several months now and when I went to see Mya last weekend, this photo was taken. As you can see, it's a match made in heaven for both of them!
How it works: the senior dog (8 yrs and older) is placed with the senior citizen (65 and older) on a fostering agreement (approved homes only). That puts the dog into a loving environment for the rest of it's life and that gives the senior family member a companion. Legally, the dog remains the property of the rescue ensuring their care for the rest of their lives. What this program does is also offer them peace of mind for all the "in case" scenarios.
For instance, people overlook the older dogs because they fear higher vet bills and catastrophic illnesses. By the rescue retaining ownership, if a sudden illness occurs the rescue is there. And, on the flip of the coin, a senior citizen might put off adopting a dog due to their own fear of what will happen to that dog if they should become ill. This alleviates that concern because the dog will always come back to us. They no longer have to depend on family members to "take" the dog in that case. It eases those fears.
In essence, we are giving each party what they need and deserve. It helps our family grow and allows these great senior furkids to touch some lives and truly make a difference in a life.

We now have four dogs in this program (as of 12/04) and all parties are doing great! What a bonus this has been for both the dogs and the seniors. I just love hearing how much of a difference these dogs make in their senior's life. This is truly what it's all about. Making a difference...one dog at at time!
