The Moreshet Eldad Exhibit
Giving Voice to Jews of African Heritage
Moreshet Eldad means Eldad's Heritage.  This exhibit, created and designed by Moreshet Network volunteers in conjunction with America's Black Holocaust Museum and the Milwaukee Chapter of the American Jewish Committee, explores both historic and contemporary African and African-American Jewish communities.  Visitors  learn the story of Eldad, a traveling Jewish merchant whose 9th century diary chronicles his ancestry through the tribe of Dan--as does the Beta Israel community of Ethiopian Jews.  This exhibit educates visitors on Black Jewry all over the world--ancient Jewish communities of North Africa along with the exodus of Ethiopian Jews to Israel, forced conversions of Jews in Africa, recent DNA test results that confirm the Jewish ancestry of the southern African Lemba tribe, and African Americans of Jewish heritage including actress Lisa Bonet, musician Lenny Kravitz, and author Julius Lester. This exhibit also explores connections among Hebrew-Israelite theologies and Judaism.
Highlights of the Moreshet Eldad Exhibit
The Moreshet Eldad exhibit includes Jewish ritual objects owned by Jews of African heritage, never-before published photos by such photographers as Chester Higgins, Harvey Wang, and Jay Sand, and enlightening information on Jews of African heritage in the US, Africa, and Israel.
