LONG RANGE RESULTS IN SOUTH AFRICA

9-17-07

Joseph M. Hepsworth,

USIMLT Long Range Team

Gentlemen:
The USIMLT (LR) is back from participating in the 6th MLAIC World LRML Matches held in Cape Town, South Africa last week.  In the Grand Aggregate of Team competitions, we came in 2nd (and, as Wellington said after Waterloo -  "The nearest run thing you ever saw in your life") ahead of the fine French Team by one point, with South Africa being the overall winner.  Al Roberts has kindly made a list of the Team's accomplishments, which I forward on below.  Also, for full and complete information on all of the scores - both individual and team, please tune into this web site - http://www.sanra.co.za/BPSU_Results.htm
It was my pleasure to be Captain of the US Team and to be with everyone in Cape Town.
I also wish to take this opportunity to thank everyone, everywhere for their kind support of our Team and for their donations of money, time and labor.
The USIMLT (LR) will now begin preparing for the 7th MLAIC World LRML Matches which we will host in September, 2009 at Camp Butner (Raleigh-Durham), North Carolina.

Yours very truly,
Joe.........................

Gentlemen:

A report on Ted Greer's 10 April Camp Butner, North Carolina LRBP Practice.

Bucky Malson and I drove down to Butner on 9 April and stayed in the Camp Barracks.  The weather was mild and the next day, we gathered in the pits at 0830 to paste up some 1000 yard targets.

Eight shooters attended, including several new ones.  Ted's program was simple, all 1000 yard matches of 1 hour duration, all day long.  The weather was great - around 70F degrees, blue skies and lots of sunshine.  We all worked to get the new shooters on target and we shot and shot and shot.

The range at Butner is a good one and with the weather we had, there was mirage to read and try to decipher.  The winds were tricky, several reversals every relay.  You needed 5 to 10 minutes windage right and/or left, as they swirled about.  Bucky watched me shoot for a relay and wasn't backward about pointing out what I was doing wrong, so far as  my prone technique was concerned!!!!  AND it certainly didn't do my normal excuse repertoire any good!!  He wasn't about to accept "the patch must not have come off the bullet" or "the wind shifted, just as I let fly" PERIOD!!!

All totaled, we shot six relays, with an hour break for lunch - a most enjoyable shooting day.

Ted will again be putting on a practice day at Butner on 19 April.  Please contact him directly at - bigbear4065@eathlink.com - or by telephone - 276-694-3723 and join in the practice and the fun.

In closing, it looks as if our (Bucky, Ted and yours truly) desire to stage a USIMLT (LR) Regional at Camp Butner, just before or after Rick Weber's Fall Oak Ridge Matches (19-21 October) won't be happening.  Butner is closed the last weeks in October thru the end of November for hunting.  The three of us feel to stage the Regional in the first part of October may interfere with the Rick's Fall match (and vice versa) so we've ruled it out.  However, if any of you gentlemen would care to voice your thoughts on a Camp Butner Regional in July or early August, we could see what might be accomplished.  Please refer to my BP Match listings on my web site - www.jcunard.com - for those matches already scheduled, to avoid unnecessary conflict of dates.

Cadillac, Michigan in May, together with Friendship, Indiana and Grayling, Michigan in June are coming up fast - see you there.

Kind regards, as always to all....................

Yours very truly,

Joe.........................

Subject: USIMLT CAPE TOWN SEPT. 1-9, 2007

Date: Mon, 04 Sep 2006 18:05:11 -0400

GENTLEMEN:

REFERENCE IS MADE TO THE RESCHEDULED MLAIC LONG RANGE MATCHES TO BE HELD IN CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA.  THESE MATCHES HAVE BEEN MOVED FROM APRIL, 2007 TO 1-9 SEPTEMBER, 2007.

WE NOW HAVE A FULL YEAR TO PRACTICE SHOOTING THE 300-500-600-900-1000 YARD DISTANCES AND, A FULL YEAR TO SAVE UP OUR DOUGH.

WE HAVE A SMALL NUCLEUS OF USIMLT MEMBERS, WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE 2001-2003-2005 LR WORLD MATCHES AND I NOW EXTEND A FORMAL INVITATION TO ONE AND ALL TO JOIN WITH US IN SHOOTING THESE GREAT MUZZLE LOADING MATCHES AND REPRESENTING THESE GREAT UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

EVERYONE HAS TO PAY THEIR OWN WAY, SO FIGURE ON APPROXIMATELY $3500.00.  THESE EXPENSES ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE (SEE THE LETTER BELOW AND THE USIMLT ATTACHMENT).

THE TENTATIVE PLAN WILL BE TO FLY INTO ATLANTA, STAY OVERNIGHT AND THEN FLY  AS A TEAM TO CAPE TOWN.

EVERYONE WILL BE ABLE TO SHOOT AS INDIVIDUALS AND THEN OUR FOUR MAN TEAMS (MID-RANGE 300-500-600 AND LONG RANGE 900-1000) WILL BE SELECTED.

THERE WILL BE SIGHTSEEING EVENTS, TEAM GET-TOGETHERS, ETC.  THE CAPE TOWN AREA IS MAGNIFICENT.  FURTHER, TEAM MEMBER DAVE GULLO IS GOING HUNTING AND THOSE WISHING TO JOIN IN AND/OR HUNT WHILE IN THE RSA CAN DO SO, DAVE WILL BE PLEASED TO GIVE YOU INFORMATION.  IN ADDITION, THERE ARE OTHER AVAILABLE SAFARI GUIDES AND OUTFITTERS, MOST PLEASED TO BE OF SERVICE - INQUIRE WITH ME, SHOULD THIS BE OF INTEREST.

ALL SHOOTERS ARE WELCOME AND ENCOURAGED TO JOIN IN.  PLEASE DO NOT FEEL YOU ARE NOT A GOOD ENOUGH SHOOTER.  WE WELCOME ALL COMERS AND BE ASSURED THE REPRESENTING OF THE GOOD OLD USA, AS ONLY YOU PERSONALLY CAN, WILL BE ONE OF THE VERY HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR SHOOTING CAREER.  YOU WILL MEET LRML SHOOTERS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD, MAKE NEW AND LASTING FRIENDS AND WILL HAVE A BLAST (PUN INTENDED).

I AM CO-ORDINATING THE USIMLT AND WILL BE HAPPY TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE.  BASICALLY, THE RULES ARE QUITE STRAIGHT FORWARD. ONE CAN SHOOT EITHER AN ORIGINAL, UNALTERED RIFLE OR A REPLICA.  THESE RIFLES SHOULD BE .451 AND SHOULD BE IN THE SPIRIT OF THE THE BRITISH WHITWORTH, RIGBY, GIBBS RIFLES OF THE 1860-1880'S.  HOWEVER, UNDERHAMMER, &C ARE ALSO OKAY.   THESE RIFLES MUST WEIGH 15LBS OR UNDER AND HAVE SIGHTS IN THE CORRECT STYLE.  SLINGS ONLY ARE USED AT MID-RANGE AND AT LONG RANGE, ONE MAY USE A SLING OR A WRIST REST (NOT BOTH) - NO CROSS STICKS.  THAT'S ABOUT IT FOR RULES - NATURALLY, THESE ARE CHANGING ALL THE TIME AND REQUIREMENTS ARE CONSTANTLY BEING UPDATED.  A RECENT CHANGE ALLOWS THE USE OF LEATHER SHOOTING COATS.

I LOOK FORWARD WITH KEEN ANTICIPATION TO HEARING FROM ANY AND ALL.  I URGE YOU TO SERIOUSLY CONSIDER THE ABOVE AND BEING IN ON THE FUN. YOURS VERY TRULY, JOE HEPSWORTH, ACTING CAPTAIN, USIMLT (LR)
