WEST HARTFORD GIRLS BASKETBALL LEAGUE

PHILOSOPHY

The West Hartford Girls Basketball League (WHGBL) was conceived to promote the goals of learning the game of  basketball, developing team spirit, sportsmanship and having fun in a somewhat informal atmosphere. Sportsmanship and fun are high priorities. Coaches, players and fans wishing to place an emphasis on competition, formality and unsportsman-like behavior are encouraged to participate elsewhere. Any conduct by coaches, players and fans deemed contrary to this philosophy will not be tolerated (i.e. overt criticism of coaches, players and referees by anyone). All teams and coaches are expected to congratulate each other at the conclusion of the game. Players are developing athletes: no jewelry, watches, rings, earrings and especially necklaces may be worn in games or practices. The safety of all players is a high priority.

     a)  Junior League: Grades 4-6; This league’s focus is not competitive. This league emphasizes beginning instruction in basketball skills, strategy and teamwork. It is intended that coaches will informally meet prior to a game and mutually agree on players of equal caliber playing against each other where possible. Evenly matched games allowing all young players to participate is the goal. Running up the score and other unsportsman-like acts should be avoided at all times. Star players should be coached in the fine art of involving all team members rather than individual glory. No team or individual standings are maintained. No overtime games are allowed and there is no playoff championship at the end of the season.

  b)  Senior League: Grades 7-8; This league was formed to build on the skills and teamwork established in the Junior League. There are a number of specific rule changes from the Junior League that reflect the more competitive nature and the increased skills of the players in this league. In addition, team standings are maintained and a playoff championship will be held at the end of the regular season. The top eight teams qualify for the first round of the playoffs (assuming no unsportsman-like problems occur during the regular season). Teams not involved in the playoffs will compete against each other the first weekend of the playoffs.

   c)  Alumni League: Grades 9-12; This league was formed to build on the skills and teamwork established in the Senior League and to provide a outlet for players unable or unwilling to commit to the rigors of formal high school basketball. Players who share a passion for the game are encouraged to participate just for the fun of it. Early season practices give way to less practice, more games. The top four teams qualify for the playoffs and a league champion is crowned.
